Match Preview: Round 7 v Crows

All the key points ahead of this week's trip to Adelaide Oval.

Where and When: Saturday, April 30 at 2:10pm EST, Adelaide Oval

    Last time they met:

Jesse Hogan made a triumphant four-goal comeback as the GIANTS recorded a resounding 15.16 (106) to 4.15 (39) win at Adelaide Oval in round seven last year. Hogan, in his first game for the GIANTS, formed a dangerous forward partnership with Harry Himmelberg (three goals) and Sam Reid (two goals) as the attacking trio feasted on supply from a dominant midfield led by best-afield Tim Taranto (34 disposals, seven clearances) and Jacob Hopper (30 possessions). Wingers Lachie Whitfield (30 touches) and Josh Kelly (27 disposals) were also influential.

    Broadcast:

Saturday’s match will be shown live on Fox Footy and Kayo nationally and on Channel 7 in NSW and the ACT from 2pm EST. The match will also be shown via the AFL Live app with a subscription purchase. The match can also be heard on the following radio stations in Sydney this week: SEN’s AFL Nation. What it means for the GIANTS:

Leon Cameron believes it isn’t season over for his side despite falling to 1-5 after losing to St Kilda at Manuka Oval on Friday night. The GIANTS have been dealt a difficult hand by the powers-that-be with fixtures against three sides in the top-four – Melbourne, Fremantle and now St Kilda – as well as Richmond, but there is no hiding from the fact that it’s a less than ideal start to the season. A win against the Crows on the road could be exactly what the GIANTS need to ignite their 2022 season.

    Player watch:

Two suspensions in three games isn’t what Braydon Preuss would’ve envisioned when he moved from Melbourne to the GIANTS in search of greater opportunity at the end of 2020, having moved from North Melbourne to the Demons in a similar pursuit. But in Canberra on Friday night, the 26-year-old made a strong return, amassing 47 hit-outs, 13 disposals and a goal.

    In the mix:

Key forward Jesse Hogan will put his hand up for selection after being managed last week. The GIANTS could also set to be bolstered by the inclusions of Conor Stone and Zach Sproule, pending fitness tests later this week. Stone returns from a hamstring injury he sustained during the AAMI Community Series, while forward Zach Sproule also looks likely for an early return following surgery on his shoulder, though the duo would likely return via the VFL. Plenty of players have put their hands up during the VFL side’s strong start to the season, with the likes of Jarrod Brander, Jake Riccardi, Leek Aleer, Xavier O’Halloran, Cooper Hamilton, Ryan Angwin, Josh Fahey and Kieren Briggs all in contention for senior selection.

GIANTS Make Big Statement Over Crows

A dominant first half helped the GIANTS to a 59-point win at Adelaide Oval.

Toby Greene has terrorised Adelaide with a four-goal haul to inspire the GIANTS to an upset 59-point win.

Greene also had a hand in two other goals in the GIANTS' boilover 17.11 (113) to 8.6 (54) victory on Saturday at Adelaide Oval.

In just his second match after serving a six-game ban for making contact with an umpire, Greene ensured the GIANTS belied the form guide to chalk up a second win of the season.

Greene starred with an attacking support cast featuring his co-captain Stephen Coniglio, Jesse Hogan and Lachie Whitfield, who each booted three goals.

The GIANTS midfield, headlined by the brilliant Josh Kelly (41 disposals, seven inside 50s), Tom Green (24 touches), Isaac Cumming (33 possessions) and Tim Taranto (23 disposals, one goal), dominated the lacklustre Crows.

Adelaide's Rory Laird (35 possessions) and Ben Keays (27 touches) battled against the tide while Taylor Walker kicked two majors.

But the Crows' woes were compounded by acting captain Brodie Smith being knocked out - after taking a spectacular mark, his head forcefully hit the ground on landing - while Ned McHenry also didn't return after a third-term head knock.

The GIANTS trump card Greene kicked the first goal of the game after taking a chest mark on the back of Adelaide's Jordan Butts, triggering an opening assault from the visitors.

The GIANTS booted 5.4 to Adelaide's 1.1 for the quarter as Greene kicked two majors, missed another, and had a hand in a chain of play that led to a Whitfield goal.

    00:38

The dynamo slotted another two goals in the second quarter, crumbing a pack for a left-foot snap and, two minutes later, converting with a right-foot snap.

Greene's efforts with both feet came amid another scoring deluge for the GIANTS who added six goals to one for a whopping 59-point half-time lead, 11.8 to 2.3.

In the third term, Coniglio, as he did in the second quarter, opened the goal scoring.

Soon after, Greene offered a handball to teammate Taranto for another goal and when Harry Himmelberg followed with yet another, the Giants amassed a 79-point lead.

Adelaide trailed by 72 points at three quarter-time and belatedly outscored the GIANTS in the final term as the Crows crashed to a fourth loss in seven games.

    The jolly Green(e) GIANTS

With Greene at his game-changing best in the forward line, another Green was dominating in the midfield. At just 21 years old, Tom Green is establishing himself as one of the game’s most exciting onballers. His skills and game sense were on full display against the Crows, with one perfectly executed handball setting up Greene for the forward’s third goal.

    Old friends become foes

Adelaide’s Josh Rachele has been tearing it up in his debut season, kicking 12 goals in his first six games. But on Saturday, he faced off against his best mate Cooper Hamilton. Debuting for the GIANTS, rookie-listed Hamilton picked up 12 touches and five tackles, while Rachele was thrown on the ball and managed three clearances and 11 touches.
