Coach Leon Cameron believes midfielder Toby Greene is in career-best form as he approaches his 50th game against North Melbourne this weekend.

Since returning from a club-imposed suspension in Round 16, Greene has averaged 27 touches a match, including a 35-possession game against Fremantle and a career-high 10 tackles last Saturday against Richmond.

“We’ve had a number of players play their 50th games this year and Toby’s been terrific for this footy club since he’s come back,” Cameron said after training on Wednesday.

“He’s actually probably playing the best footy he’s played in his short time at the GIANTS.

“Last week I thought he was terrific, the week before as well, it’s great to see what persistence can do.”

Cameron said Greene’s response to the five-match ban demonstrated the type of person the 20-year-old is.

"He's responded like any good young kid that has good values," Cameron said. "He just put his head down, his bum up and he's done the work.

"He wants to win over the respect of his players, his coaches, his family, and I think he's done a fantastic job.

"I actually thought Toby handled it better than a lot of people when it happened.

"He just copped it on the chin, he understood he did the wrong thing and he's proving to everyone what a good person and good footballer he is at the moment.

“Toby’s passionate about his football, he’s passionate about his teammates and he’s passionate about the GIANTS.”

Pick number 11 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, Greene was one of the standouts of the GIANTS’ inaugural season, bursting onto the AFL scene and averaging more than 28 touches in his 19 games.

At just 19, Greene finished runner-up in the 2012 Kevin Sheedy Medal and took out the Member’s Choice Award and GIANTS Rising Star Award.

He established himself as one of the GIANTS’ future stars with another 19 games last season, averaging 22 possessions.

Co-captain Callan Ward said Greene had earned back the trust of the playing group and was pleased to have him back on the field.

“He’s really lifted his game, especially since the five weeks,” Ward said.

“I think he’s realised he does need to earn the respect back and he’s done that over the last couple of weeks.

“His form’s been absolutely terrific, he’s always in and under. He’s obviously a tough kid and obviously his tackles on the weekend - he had 10 or 11.

“I think that’s what we expect him to do every single week.”
