It was a double blow on the injury front at the MCG on Friday night, with both Brent Daniels (calf) and Max Gruzewski (patella dislocation) unable to finish the match after being ruled out in the second quarter.
The pair returned to Sydney on Saturday and underwent scans over the weekend, with the extent of their injuries now confirmed.
There is positive news for Gruzewski, with scans confirming the key forward won't require surgery at this stage. The club's medical and high-performance teams will manage his rehabilitation conservatively over the coming weeks before gradually reintroducing him to training.
A specific timeline is yet to be determined for Daniels regarding his calf strain. Given his injury history, the club will take a measured approach and expects to have a clearer indication of his return-to-play timeline in three weeks.
Meanwhile, a trio of GIANTS could return to the action this week with Jack Buckley (hamstring), Toby McMullin (hamstring) and Nick Madden (knee) all set to face fitness tests in Thursday’s main training as they push to return from their respective injuries.
Jayden Laverde is progressing well in his hamstring rehabilitation, set to increase his speed exposure while also participating in modified team training this week.
Xavier O’Halloran will continue to advance in his rehabilitation and is expected to be re-introduced into modified team training later this week.
Draftee Finn Davis suffered a low-grade quad strain in the club’s VFL win over Box Hill on Saturday, which is expected to see him sidelined until after the club’s round 16 VFL bye.
Darcy Jones will return to unrestricted team training this week following his arthroscope surgery.
Ollie Hannaford had his moonboot removed last Friday and will increase his weight-bearing activity.
Meanwhile, Jake Riccardi will look to run for the first time later this week following his syndesmosis surgery.
Jesse Hogan underwent surgery on his fractured finger on Monday last week. He will have his post-op consult with the surgeon on Wednesday this week but will remain in a specialised splint for at least six weeks, with further return to play timelines to be determined following that period.
The GIANTS’ AFL side will travel to Canberra this week to face the Dockers, while the VFL side will host Coburg in Narrandera.
