Following a trade completed today with the Gold Coast Suns, the Greater Western Sydney GIANTS have secured the first five picks in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft.

In the Club’s third deal of the official AFL Trade Period the GIANTS have secured pick number four in this year’s draft, along with the mid first round compensation pick the Suns received from the Geelong Cats in a trade, after compensation for the loss of Gary Ablett.

The GIANTS will have the option to activate the compensation pick over a three-year period from the 2012 draft.

In return the Suns have secured the first selection from the GWS GIANTS Incentive Trades, which will be used in the mini draft on Monday October 17 along with pick 31 in this year’s draft.

National Recruitment and List Manger Stephen Silvagni said that the club is pleased to have secured a suitable trade for the first selection of the GWS GIANTS Trade Incentive mini draft.

“Obviously we are in a very strong position to secure the best talent out of this year’s draft with the first five picks and importantly ten of the first 14.

“By securing the compensation pick from the Suns we are also able to continue to look ahead to the best young talent that we want to bring to the GIANTS in the future.

"It is our responsibility to our supporters and fans to build a playing list over the next few years that ultimately achieves sustained success, not simply to be competitive. It is an important distinction and at the heart of our list development plan that focuses on attracting and retaining exciting young talent.

“We will continue to find innovative and progressive ways to develop our playing list to ensure we achieve success for our fans.”
