This week marks AFL Women’s Round, which is a chance to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution of women in Australia’s game.
To help kick off the celebrations, GIANTS Co-Captain Callan Ward and NAB AFL Rising Star nominee Stephen Coniglio have put on their suits and bow ties to raise awareness for an issue that is plaguing many young women globally.
Modern-day slavery, also known as trafficking, is the world’s second largest, fastest growing and most lucrative commercial enterprise.
Australian charity, Project Futures has launched the 2012 Stella Fella campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the global issue of human trafficking by publically recognizing Australian men who uphold strong values and make a significant contribution to the community.
Midfielder Stephen Coniglio said that the GIANTS were proud to be supporting the Stella Fella campaign in 2012.
“This is a great cause. The bow ties are a symbol for the campaign; they symbolize chivalry, respect and a commitment to stand against slavery,” Coniglio said.
“I think that Cal has probably pulled off the bow tie a little bit better than I have. He’s a few years older than me so his facial hair suits it and I can’t really grow it properly.
“We’re encouraging people to buy a bow tie to wear on Bow Tie Friday, September 7 2012 to show their support for this cause.”
