He once cheered for the crosstown rival, but proud GIANTS member Leigh Stanger is now firmly part of the Orange Army.
Growing up in Sydney’s Hills District, Stanger’s sporting journey began far from AFL. As a kid, he cheered for Parramatta and Balmain in the Rugby League before switching allegiances in high school when Saturday afternoon VFL broadcasts caught his eye. Captivated by the game’s constant movement, he became a North Melbourne supporter during the Ron Barassi era - and he’s been hooked on Aussie Rules ever since.
“I’ve always found AFL a much more interesting game to watch - the ball’s always moving,” Stanger says.
“And I’ve got a lot of respect for the camera crews who manage to keep up with it all.”
For a time, Stanger followed the Swans when they played at Olympic Stadium, but when the GIANTS were formed and made their home at Homebush, everything clicked.
With friends from his school days and some of their partners, Stanger decided to join as a GIANTS member - and he hasn’t looked back.
“It’s been a great way to get outdoors, enjoy a pie, and spend time with friends watching live sport. You just can’t beat the atmosphere.”
Since joining, Stanger has become the unofficial organiser of his groups’ annual GIANTS trip to Canberra - a tradition that’s become one of the highlights of his season.
“We make a weekend of it – for eight years or so, around 10 of us travel down, walk to the game, and enjoy the local cafes and restaurants. It’s just a great time.”
He’s also travelled interstate to support the team, including the unforgettable 2018 draw against the Saints at Marvel Stadium. But there’s still one bucket list item in Stanger's sights.
“On my bucket list is certainly watching the GIANTS play live at the MCG.”
“I really enjoy watching good quality AFL matches, you see and hear much more on televised matches, but you do miss out on the live game atmosphere.”
Looking ahead, Stanger hopes to get to even more games next season - and encourages others to do the same.
“I’m really hoping to get to more games next year where I can manage it. It’s always an interesting time, (different opposing teams, win or lose, wet or dry), and a great experience and I’m certainly looking forward to going to more GIANTS games in 2026.”
