Young star Zarlie Goldsworthy has capped off a phenomenal season by being crowned the 2025 Gabrielle Trainor medallist as the GIANTS’ club champion for the year.
Awarded at Crown Sydney on Monday night, Goldsworthy led a tight count, finishing the night on 40 points, just ahead of captain Rebecca Beeson on 38 points and dual third-place finishers, Tarni Evans and Eilish O’Dowd.
In one of the closest counts of recent years, Goldsworthy’s versatility - being deployed across the season both as a midfielder and in the forward line - sealed her the win.
It’s the second time the 20-year-old has claimed the accolade, having previously won in her breakout 2023 season, which also saw her claim the Fearless and Rising Star medals for the club, as well as the AFLW Rising Star award.
Named in the 22Under22 squad for the third consecutive season, Goldsworthy continues to perform for the club and was a stand-out performer in the round six Sydney Derby win over the Swans, with a career-high 31-dispsals.
GIANTS Executive General Manager of AFLW, Alison Zell congratulated Goldsworthy for her enormous contribution to the club across the season and achievement in being crowned the Gabrielle Trainor Medallist for 2025.
“Zarlie has been a star for the GIANTS again this season and this award is a highly-deserved reflection of her performances week-in and out for the team,” Zell said.
“Zarlie epitomises our values of fearless, all in and competitor as someone who trained all pre-season as a forward and by round two was playing as a full-time midfielder after Alyce Parker’s injury. She did so with class and intent, doing everything she could - nearly always at 100% game time - to help the team.
“We’re immensely proud of the person and player that Zarlie is for our club and her continued growth, becoming both a preeminent midfielder and forward in the league. In just her fourth season she’s now won two club champion awards in two different positions, and we know she has plenty more improvement in her.
“I congratulate her on this achievement and look forward to her driving the GIANTS forward as a core member of our young team in seasons to come.”
Brodee Mowbray capped off a sensational season with two awards on the night, taking home Mark of the Year for a courageous grab in round two against Collingwood, as well as the prestigious Jacinda Barclay Fearless Award, having been nominated by her teammates for her consistent determination across the season.
Tarni Evans was rewarded for her career-best season as the club’s Leading Goal Kicker as well as with the Goal of the Year for her dashing left-pocket effort against Fremantle in round 12, while fellow AFL Canberra draftee Emily Pease took out the Coaches Award, following a career-best year for the defender.
Cambridge McCormick and Kaitlyn Srhoj rounded out the major awards for the night, taking out the Community and Members’ Choice Awards respectively.
McCormick has enjoyed an outstanding season on-field, placing equal fifth alongside fellow leader Katherine Smith and was recognised for her impact off-field as a driver of culture and consideration for the group while Srhoj’s star power and ability to stand-up in big moments earned her admiration from fans.
