Inaugural AFLW player Aliesha Newman has announced her retirement from the game, following this Saturday’s round 12 match-up with Port Adelaide.

Beginning her journey as the final player signed by the Melbourne Demons ahead of the league’s first season in 2017, the speedy small forward has gone on to play 66 games across four clubs; the Demons, Magpies, Swans and GIANTS.

Joining the GIANTS from cross-town rivals the Swans through the 2023 Trade Period, Newman has featured in eight matches for the orange and charcoal and has become a much-loved teammate and figure around GIANTS HQ for her contribution to the club’s culture and community.

Across her playing career, Newman has been a role model for all young women and particularly as an ambassador for young First Nations athletes, as a proud Ningy Ningy woman, originally from southeast Queensland.

Alongside her on field duties, Newman has established herself as an Indigenous artist and advocate.

Newman has designed Indigenous Round jumpers for each of the clubs she has represented and re-designed the AFLW’s first Indigenous Round logo back in 2021.

She leaves an indelible legacy on the game for her contribution to the league both for her football and championing of Indigenous culture.

“Football has given me so much more than I could have dreamed of,” Newman told her teammates upon announcing her retirement on Tuesday.

“It’s given me a sense of belonging, a family away from home and the chance to grow into someone I never thought I could be.

“Through this game, I’ve found my purpose, I’ve been able to give back through coaching, mentoring and connecting with the next generation, especially within the indigenous community.

“Above all else, football has given me teammates, coaches and lifelong friends who have become family.”

GIANTS Executive General Manager of AFLW, Alison Zell, congratulated Newman on her 10-season career.

“We congratulate Aliesha on an incredible career and thank her for an outstanding contribution to both our club and the game itself,” Zell said.

“’Newy’ has been a much-loved character around the GIANTS and leaves a significant legacy here, as much for her work ethic and zeal for the game as her impact on our community away from football.

“The effect she has had on both our playing group and wider AFLW team, through her passion for storytelling and the enthusiasm she brings into every session will be sorely missed.

“The club wishes Aliesha all the best for her future endeavours and thank for her lasting impact on the game.”
