Captain Stephen Coniglio has withdrawn from the team to take on Essendon on Sunday night at Metricon Stadium.

Coniglio missed 12 weeks after suffering a syndesmosis ankle injury and toe injury in the same incident in round three.

He played two games in the VFL before making his return to AFL level last weekend.

Coach Leon Cameron said Coniglio reported toe soreness following training this week.

“Stephen reported soreness in that toe he had operated on earlier this year,” Cameron said.

“It was obviously a really significant injury, alongside the ankle, so we’re taking a cautious approach and he won’t play this weekend.

“We’ll see how he pulls up over the next few days in terms of his availability for next week.”

Callan Ward will come back into the 22 after being initially managed for this weekend.

Nick Shipley will come into the squad as an emergency alongside Zach Sproule, James Peatling and Jake Riccardi.

Josh Kelly will captain the side in his 150th game as he becomes the ninth life member of the club.

The GIANTS take on the Bombers at 6:10pm on Sunday night.
