In the short but storied history of the Sydney Derby, only three players have ever played for both the GIANTS and Swans.

Of those three players, only one of them - Shane Mumford - has actually appeared for both clubs in a Derby match.

With Sydney Derby XXI not far away, it seems fitting to to take a look at who has played and coached on both sides of the Anzac Bridge.

Shane Mumford

Originally drafted by Geelong, Mumford played 21 games with the Cats before moving to the Swans in 2010.

The aggressive big man thrived under John Longmire and helped the Swans to an upset win over Hawthorn in the 2012 Grand Final, but a year later again found himself switching clubs when the shock arrival of superstar forward Lance Franklin forced him out.

Mumford made his GIANTS debut against his old side in round one, 2014, and despite missing five matches early in the season due to a knee injury, won the Kevin Sheedy Medal at the end of his first season.

The now 35-year-old has since played 111 games for the GIANTS, establishing himself as one of the best rucks in the AFL.

Jed Lamb

Drafted at pick 21 in 2010, Lamb played 10 games for the GIANTS after crossing from the Swans at the end of 2013.

Named in the 2015 NEAFL Team of the Year for the GIANTS, Lamb was traded to Carlton at the end of 2015 alongside Lachie Plowman, Andrew Phillips and Liam Sumner.

Shaun Edwards

Edwards was a pre-listed player at the GIANTS in 2011, where he played his debut year in the NEAFL before the club transitioned into the AFL.

He made his AFL debut for the GIANTS against Adelaide in 2012.

In October 2013, Edwards was traded to Essendon before being drafted by Sydney in the 2017 Rookie Draft.

After failing to play a match at AFL level during the 2017 season, he retired from AFL football at the conclusion of the season to focus on Indigenous education in Australia and around the world.

Steve Johnson

Steve Johnson returned home to the GIANTS as an Assistant Coach ahead of the 2021 season.

Johnson played 40 games for the GIANTS in 2016 and 2017 as the final chapter in a decorated playing career which included three premierships and a Norm Smith Medal at Geelong.

Following his retirement in 2017, Johnson spent three years as an Assistant Coach at the Sydney Swans.

He returned to the GIANTS as our forward line coach following 516 goals in his 297-game career.

Adam Schneider

Adam Schneider joined the GIANTS’ coaching staff ahead of the 2018 season, returning to his home state as the club’s NEAFL coach, having grown up in southern NSW and attended school in Leeton and Wagga Wagga.

Schneider retired from the AFL at the end of 2015 after 228 games with the Swans and St Kilda, including the Swans’ drought-breaking 2005 Premiership against West Coast.

After being an important mentor at St Kilda late in his playing career, Schneider moved into coaching in 2017, leading Beaumaris in the VAFA Premier Division.

Schneider was promoted to an assistant coaching role at the GIANTS ahead of the 2020 AFL season.

Amon Buchanan

Former Swans and Brisbane player Amon Buchanan was appointed as a Development Coach at the GIANTS at the end of 2013.

He has since moved into the role of a line coach, initially taking responsibility for the forwards group before taking charge of stoppages for the 2018 season onwards.

Buchanan played 134 AFL games over 11 years, including the Swans' 2005 premiership alongside Adam Schneider.

Bonus Crosstown Traffic:

Former Swans ruckman Stephen Doyle - who played 47 games for the Swans between 2000-2007 - is now the Head of Football Operations at the GIANTS.

Jason Saddington played 142 games for the Swans across eight seasons and now heads up the club's Academies.
