GREATER Western Sydney duo, and best mates, Taylor Adams and Devon Smith will complete a remarkable AFL journey when they head to Geelong to face the Cats on Saturday.
The two young Giants, who grew up in the Geelong area, first met at an under-12 Victorian trial.
"We became friends and then played footy together and against each other from about under-14s onwards," Adams told AFL.com.au.
"It's been about five or six years and we played against each other and had a few biffs and what not, but we've been friends ever since."
Fast forward to November 24, 2011 at Sydney Olympic Park – NAB AFL Draft night.
The two young prospects, both coming off strong seasons with the Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup, had spoken to a number of AFL clubs, but had no idea where they were about to begin their senior careers.
Naturally they were hopeful of ending up at the same club, but the chances were relatively slim, even accounting for GWS' heavy draft concessions.
As the top 10 came and went, and neither had been selected, their nerves grew. Then, with pick 13, the Giants selected Adams.
GWS also had pick 14. Sure enough, the next name to be called out by list manager Steve Silvagni was Devon Smith.
"It's something we were both nervous about, hoping we'd both go to the same club," Adams said.
"It was what we really wanted, but we had no idea until we were read out at 13 and 14.
"It was pretty surreal. I had spoken to about 10 clubs all up and didn't know where I was going to go or what range.
"It was all a bit of a mystery to me and when we got called out one after the other, it was really exciting."
This week the two teammates will head back to Geelong to take on the Cats at the ground they used to play on in the TAC Cup.
Adams will have as many as 20 family and friends watching in the stands at Simonds Stadium.
"It's going to feel a bit different," he said. "It will probably feel like a bit of a home game for me.
"I love playing on [Simonds]. Hopefully we go down there and play well as a team and give the Cats a run."
Adams and Smith are following a long line of AFL players to have represented the Geelong Falcons, which has been a football factory since it was founded in 1992.
Gary Ablett jr, Jonathan Brown, Luke Hodge, Jimmy Bartel and Cameron Ling are some of the greats to have played with the club.
And now, after first meeting each other all those years ago, two more former Falcons are realising their AFL dream, living at Breakfast Point together in Sydney's west.
"If someone said that to me two years ago, I would've laughed at them," Adams said.
"But now it's all sunk in and we're settled in at Breakfast Point and it's all good.
"Obviously I wanted to stay in Victoria and close to family and friends originally, but I wouldn't take anything back or change anything.
"It's been a great experience and being away from home has helped me grow as a person and I'm really enjoying my time up here."
