On September 12 2011, after months of media hype and speculation about his future, Tom Scully committed to a future with the Greater Western Sydney GIANTS, announcing that he would join the AFL’s newest franchise in 2012.
It was a life changing decision for the 20 year old midfielder who has amassed an impressive list of achievements in his short football career including, selection in the All-Australian Under 18 side in both 2008 and 2009, number one draft pick for the Melbourne Football Club in 2009, Runner up in the 2010 NAB AFL Rising Star award and Best First Year Player at Melbourne in 2010. Now, five weeks later, the talented teenager has had some time to reflect on his decision as he packs his bags and prepares to head to Sydney for preseason training.
GIANTS’ reporter Beck Mills caught up with Scully to find out how he is feeling after a break and what he plans on loading in the truck to Sydney.
So Tom, what have you been up to since you signed with the GIANTS?
“I went to America for four weeks and travelled around with my sister Jess. It was good to just take my mind off footy for a little while and let my body rest.
“I was doing a bit of modified training while I was overseas to make sure that I’d done enough to attack preseason feeling fit and fresh.”
It’s been just over five weeks since your press conference, how are you feeling about everything now that the dust has settled?
“I’m really excited.
“I can’t wait to get to Sydney and start building good relationships with the other players, the staff and the community as well. “
The day that you signed was a massive milestone in your life, have you thought about it much since then?
“I haven’t thought about it too much to be honest.
“It was obviously a big day for me but I was just relieved that the decision was made and after meeting everyone involved at the club, I’m really thankful that they’ve shown a lot of faith in me.”
How have your family and friends reacted to your decision?
“I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from people who are close to me.
“People can see that the GIANTS are a great opportunity not just for me but for the game of AFL as a whole. I’ve had a lot of support.”
So you’re moving up to Sydney at the end of next week, what are you doing to prepare for it?
“At the moment I’m running around like crazy trying to get everything organised and packing my stuff to put on a truck up to Sydney.
“I’ve also been catching up with as many family and friends as I can before I leave.”
How are they feeling about the move?
“They can see that it will be a great chance for me to step out of my comfort zone.
“I have a really great family, I know I’ll miss them but Sydney is only an hour away by plane.
“I lived with my mum and dad for eighteen years before moving out with my sister. That was a pretty big deal for me personally but moving interstate is massive.”
Is there anything you have that you can’t decide whether to pack or leave behind?
“I didn’t realise until I started packing how many clothes and shoes I’d accumulated (laughs).
“I think I’ll have to get rid of some clothes because they will be a waste of space.”
Are you and Jess fighting over who gets to keep anything at your place?
“There’s a big fruit bowl that is really cool at home. Jess said she wants to keep it so I’ll give it to her and see if I can find another one.”
Thanks for taking some time to give our fans and members an update on where you’re at on your holidays, good luck packing.
“No worries, I can’t wait to be up there.”
