The GIANTS are honoured to be awarded the Sports Medal in the Premier’s Multicultural Community Awards, announced this week.

The award recognises the achievements of an individual or sporting code who has promoted cultural understanding and sporting endeavours within or between communities of different cultural and/or linguistic backgrounds.

The Shepherds Bay Plaza Sports Medal was awarded to the GIANTS as part of the 2020 Premier’s Multicultural Community Medals.

Acting Minister for Multiculturalism and Sport Geoff Lee said it was outstanding to see the GIANTS recognised with the prestigious medal.

“The club’s suite of programs and activities encouraging participation and inclusion demonstrate the benefits of cultural diversity,” Mr Lee said.

“I want to congratulate the GIANTS on their achievements.

“The GIANTS have made an outstanding contribution to Western Sydney and are absolute champions for diversity. Clubs like the GIANTS promote a sense of community and welcome that reflects the unique power of sport.”

The GIANTS are proud of their community programs that have been at the forefront of the club over the past decade of its existence with work in both the Western Sydney and Canberra communities.

GIANTS Head of Community Ali Faraj said:

"The GIANTS are honoured to receive the Premier’s Multicultural Community Sports Medal,” he said.

“We have established a deep connection with our communities over the past decade which has been central to the club’s continued growth.

“We have an unwavering commitment to diversity, as evidenced by key events such as our annual Welcome Round match and the GIANTS Iftar.

“These are  important events for the community and valuable opportunities to bring leaders from all cultures together to celebrate social cohesion and the important role sport plays in fostering inclusion.”

The GIANTS have adapted their programs to continue to work and invest in our local communities across the COVID pandemic.

The Premier’s Multicultural Community Medals are traditionally awarded at the annual Premier’s Harmony Dinner gala event. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Premier’s Multicultural Community Medals were awarded virtually.
