Footy fans aren't the only ones intrigued by next month's unveiling of AFLX.

The competition's 18 teams will compete over three days in three different states to officially launch the modified format on February 15, and coaches and players have just as many questions as the supporters.

The GIANTS will be part of the showcase when they take on Sydney, Gold Coast, the Brisbane Lions, plus the League's past two premiers in Richmond and the Western Bulldogs.

The matches will be played on the specially designed rectangular field at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Saturday February 17.

GIANTS coach Leon Cameron told AFL.com.au that AFLX is a unique way to officially start season 2018.

"We're looking forward to it because we get to play five other teams, and it is an exciting opportunity because it is new," he said.

"I think there's a real sense of the unknown when you start to compete against another side.

"How fast do you move the ball? Do you kick it long or play keepings off? Do you play a tall or more runners?

"All those sorts of questions will no doubt be answered after that weekend, but from our point of view we're looking forward to having a good crack at it."

The seven-a-side game will be fast-paced and is sure to make the coaches and players frantic at times, but Cameron said he and his coaching staff hadn't begun to talk tactics yet.

It seems the host of unique rules, rather than the smaller teams, will be the most challenging aspect of the new format.

"I think a lot of clubs play games similar to AFLX at training, be it seven-on-seven or eight-on-eight or whatever it might be, on a medium-sized field," he said.

"We did a 10-on-10 game this week on a modified court, so a lot of that type of stuff is already happening during the pre-season."

The GIANTS should have an imposing side given the quality of their running brigade, and Cameron said he wouldn't be hiding his stars from the debut of AFLX.

"I expect guys like Tom Scully, Lachie Whitfield and Callan Ward to be rolling out along with some of our younger boys, but it all depends how they're going with their pre-season," he said.

"We'll have a really good mix of experience and young guys who will be rewarded for their training with their first real crack at competing against an opposition."

The GIANTS will play in the Sydney tournament on February 17 at Allianz Stadium. Tickets will go on sale on Monday, January 22 at 9am through Ticketek. Prices start from $15 for an adult, $10 for a concession, kids 12 and under in FREE and a family of two adults and up to four juniors for $30.
