The upcoming 2020 Toyota AFL season will be like no other with the AFL announcing on Monday night that it will now consist of a 17-round season with all teams to play each other once.

In an unprecedented move announced on Monday afternoon, AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said five matches would be scrapped, at a minimum, due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

A decision on whether round one begins this Thursday night is expected in the next 24 hours.

The AFL is optimistic that the first four weeks will take place as planned before a rejigged fixture beyond that.

The AFL Players Association will hold two separate briefings with AFL and AFLW players starting from 7pm AEDT on Monday night to gauge the players' stance on playing this weekend.

Earlier in the afternoon, the AFL advised that a collective decision had been made to postpone the operation and/or the commencement of each premier State League and national and state talent program across the country.

This means the GIANTS’ participation in the NEAFL competition will not commence until at least May 31.

At this stage the GIANTS are still due to participate in round seven of the AFLW season and round one of the AFL season behind closed doors at GIANTS Stadium against Geelong on Saturday night.
