Westfund Rehab Report: Round 7

Westfund Rehab Report: Round 7 Wayne Campbell, General Manager of Football gives an update after a physical clash with the Swans at the SCG. He gives news on the likes of Lachie Whitfield, Phil Davis, Stephen Coniglio and players who we might see back this week.
We don’t think he’ll get up for this weekend but we’ll give him a chance to have some training and some running during the week but it doesn’t look likely at this stage.

Lachie Whitfield is unlikely to face the Saints in Canberra on Saturday while Harry Perryman and Jye Caldwell will return to the field this week.

Whitfield suffered a nasty cork to his quad early in Saturday’s win over the Swans with GIANTS General Manager of Football Wayne Campbell confirming the midfielder will struggle to recover for this week’s game.

“Lachie was really tough, he got the knock on the quad and had a little bit of a hip flexor problem as well so did really well to see out the game,” Campbell said.

“We don’t think he’ll get up for this weekend but we’ll give him a chance to have some training and some running during the week but it doesn’t look likely at this stage.”

Co-captain Phil Davis will look to overcome the ankle injury that kept him out of the Derby while vice-captain Stephen Coniglio has avoided surgery on a dislocated finger.

“Phil is certainly a chance,” Campbell said.

“He got close last week and as can happen, they get close to the line and drop off a little bit and he did that over the weekend.

“He’s up and running now, he’ll do some running again tomorrow and train later in the week.

“Luckily Stephen has avoided surgery, he went and saw the surgeon and had scans and things like that.

“He’s avoided surgery but it will just come down to some pain management for him so we’ll have to see how he handles the ball later in the week and we’ll go from there but he’s certainly a chance to play."

Harry Perryman will resume this weekend after suffering a punctured lung in round one while draftee Jye Caldwell is also set to play in the NEAFL after building up his training loads following groin soreness.

“Harry will certainly play, as will Jye for the first time,” Campbell said.

“Harry had that punctured lung against Essendon and has done really well, he’s done some training over the last couple of weeks.

“Jye’s had now a really good block of four weeks of training, he just had a bit of groin soreness.

“He’ll play some footy and for GIANTS fans that saw him in the JLT, that’s really exciting. It’s great to see both of the young boys up and running.”

Veteran Brett Deledio is also eyeing a return to the field, set to play next week after overcoming another calf strain.

The GIANTS take on the Saints at UNSW Canberra Oval on Saturday at 1:45pm.
