The GIANTS are delighted to announce a one-year contract extension for AFLW head coach Cam Bernasconi.

Taking the reins as the club’s AFLW head coach ahead of season seven in 2022, Bernasconi’s new deal will see him continue to lead the GIANTS’ AFLW side until at least the end of the 2026 AFLW season.

An experienced coach in both men’s and women’s pathways, Bernasconi was first involved with the club back in its earliest iteration as a member of the club’s inaugural TAC Cup side in 2010.

The Canberra native started his career in the football industry as a SportsReady trainee before being appointed as the Talent and Coaching Manager for the ACT and southern NSW back in 2014 where he was responsible for running talent programs and coach education across the region.

Bernasconi completed the NEXT Emerging Leader Program and his level three coaching accreditation while in that role and also worked within the GIANTS’ AFLW program in its inaugural season in 2017.

In 2020 Bernasconi continued his coaching rise via his appointment as the head coach of the GIANTS Academy where he worked across both the female and male Academies and was responsible for the success of many Academy graduates who went on to fulfil their AFL and AFLW dreams.

Now in his fourth season as the GIANTS’ AFLW head coach, Bernasconi has been critical in helping develop the club’s young and exciting talent and instilling a game plan capable of achieving sustained success.

The announcement of Bernasconi’s new one-year deal comes following a pair of gritty wins over the Bulldogs and the Swans in the last two weeks.

GIANTS Executive General Manager of AFLW, Alison Zell, congratulated Bernasconi on his extension.

“Cam is certainly the right person to head up our AFLW team and coming into this season, we wanted to ensure that given our confidence in him, we had the stability of locking him in until the end of 2026,” Zell said.

“Cam has built a really strong connection with our group and his coaching and development philosophies are putting us in a great spot for success.

“Under Cam’s leadership we’ve seen the emergence of some fantastic young players and really started to build an identifiable brand of football we believe will help us win games of football.

“We’ve seen particularly over the last two weeks that the brand of football Cam has instilled in this group can be really impactful when executed consistently and we’re excited about what we can continue to build and achieve under his leadership.”
