The GIANTS welcome Robbie Chancellor to the club as the new Head of Development.

The role bolsters the GIANTS’ development program, working alongside VFL/Development Coach Damian Truslove and Development Coach Alicia Eva.

Chancellor worked with new Head Coach Adam Kinglsey at St Kilda before most recently coaching the Western Jets for the past two years.

Chancellor began his career as a football technology assistant at Hawthorn before joining Melbourne as a football/opposition analyst.

He joined St Kilda in 2013 as an opposition analyst and manager of performance analysis before transitioning to coaching and becoming an assistant coach at the Saints, in charge of stoppages and team structure.

GIANTS General Manager of Football Jason McCartney said:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Robbie to the GIANTS family.

“He has a long-standing relationship with new coach Adam Kingsley and will be a valuable asset to our football program.

“Across recent months we identified a need to bolster our development program and we’re excited to have someone of the calibre of Robbie to add to this space, alongside our current development coaches.”

The GIANTS will also farewell assistant coaches Steve Johnson and Amon Buchanan.

After playing 40 games for the GIANTS across 2016 and 2017, Johnson returned to the club as an Assistant Coach ahead of the 2021 season.

Following a highly decorated playing career that included three Premierships, three All-Australian blazers and 516 goals across 297 games with Geelong and the GIANTS, Johnson retired in 2017 and spent three years as an Assistant Coach at the Sydney Swans before returning to the GIANTS as an Assistant Coach.

A former Swans and Brisbane player, Buchanan was appointed a Development Coach at the GIANTS at the end of 2013.

He then moved into the role of a line coach, initially taking responsibility for the forwards group before taking charge of stoppages for the 2018 season onwards.

Buchanan played 134 AFL games over 11 years, including the Swans’ 2005 premiership.

McCartney thanked the pair for their contribution to the club.

“We thank Steve for his significant contribution to our club as a valuable component of our coaching group over the past two years.

“We’re very appreciative that Steve and his family moved to Sydney to initially continue his playing career before transitioning into coaching.

“Steve had been considering a move back to Melbourne for some time, which he’s now pursuing and so we wish Steve, Erin, Archie, Maggie and Annie all the best for the future.

“We also thank Amon for his commitment and dedication to the club over the past nine years.

"Amon fulfilled a number of important roles in his time at the GIANTS.

“He was a key part of our coaching set-up as we reached five finals series in six seasons, including the 2019 Grand Final.

“We wish Amon, Cara, Elke, Marley and Frankie all the best for their next chapter.

“With new head coach in Adam Kingsley at the helm, we’re looking to finalise our coaching set-up in the coming weeks for 2023 and beyond.”
