Kevin Sheedy? Really?

People were surprised and many were dismissive when the AFL pursued Kevin Sheedy to be the GIANTS’ first AFL coach.

Sheedy had coached Essendon for 27 years, leading the Bombers to four flags. He also played 251 games for Richmond from 1967-79 and was a member of the Tigers' premiership teams in 1969, 1973 and 1974.

But Sheedy was now in his 60s, he'd also been out of the game for two years after he was sacked by Essendon in 2007.

But the AFL stood firm, he was seen as the perfect person to not only steer a young team of players, but sell the new club to a part of the country that had never loved AFL football.

The only problem was once they'd identified who they wanted, they still had to talk him into it.
