    Match Preview: Sydney Derby XXV

The GIANTS meet the Swans in the 25th instalment of the Sydney Derby at the SCG.

    When and Where:

    Saturday, April 29 at 2:10pm
Gadigal Country | Sydney Cricket Ground

What it Means for the GIANTS:

“There was a lot to like but a lot to work on at the same time,” GIANTS midfielder Xavier O’Halloran said of the defeat to Brisbane at Manuka Oval last weekend.

Having reviewed the narrow loss to the Lions, the GIANTS will travel across the bridge chasing not only the four points, but bragging rights over their noisy neighbours at the SCG.

    Last Time We Met:

One we’d rather forget. Sydney moved into the top four after a convincing 73-point win over the GIANTS at the SCG last year. After a competitive first 20 minutes, the Swans shifted gears, kicking nine unanswered goals at one stage to finish with a 17.10 (112) to 5.9 (39) win.

    Where’s the opposition at?

It's rare a Grand Final re-match becomes a Grand Final replay, but that’s exactly what happened at GMHBA Stadium last weekend. Geelong demolished John Longmire’s by 93 points in a 20.10 (130) to 5.7 (37) rout, holding the Swans to just three behinds in the second half.

    GIANTS Player to Watch:

GIANTS fans witnessed a glimpse into the future late in the opening term last weekend as Finn Callaghan and Aaron Cadman combined to create the GIANTS’ first goal.

    00:25

Callaghan found space on the wing and sent a pinpoint kick deep inside the forward 50 to the strong hands of Cadman, who kicked truly to kick-start the GIANTS. The 20-year-old has so far averaged 19.8 disposals and 5.2 marks so far this season and is on track for a breakout campaign in the orange and charcoal.

    In the Mix:

Adam Kingsley will be forced into at least three changes ahead of Sydney Derby XXV. Inaugural GIANT Adam Kennedy will miss the remainder of the season after rupturing his ACL, while veteran Callan Ward will miss out through suspension. Kevin Sheedy Medallist Sam Taylor has also been sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury in the GIANTS’ loss to Brisbane in Canberra last weekend. Midfielder Tom Green will return after serving a one-match suspension, with off-season recruit Toby Bedford also available after impressing in his return from injury in the VFL. Callum Brown (20 disposals, eight marks), Jake Riccardi (20 disposals, 13 marks, four goals) and Wade Derksen (24 disposals, 4 tackles) starred for the GIANTS in the VFL and could all come into contention.

GIANTS Fly Home to Stun Swans in Sydney Derby XXV

Toby Greene kicked the match-winning goal as the GIANTS stunned the Swans at the SCG.

It just had to be Toby Greene.

With a brilliantly snapped right-foot goal inside the final minute, the GIANTS' superstar captain has piloted his team to a remarkable come-from-behind win over crosstown rival Sydney at the SCG on Saturday afternoon.

    03:23

In an enthralling Sydney Derby, the GIANTS trailed by 24 points early in the final quarter and then kicked the final four goals of the game to win 17.5 (107) to 16.10 (106).

Harry Perryman got the comeback going with two goals – including one from 50m – and Greene was the man to finish it off.

Firstly, he somehow threw his left boot at a ball on the ground and soccered it accurately to bring the visitors within a goal.

And then at a forward 50 stoppage Greene grabbed the ball from congestion, threw it on his right boot and watched it sail over the desperate hands of Sydney's defenders to give his team the lead with 42 seconds remaining.

He finished with four goals and two assists from his 22 disposals to win the Brett Kirk Medal as the best player afield.

It was the second straight home game the Swans have lost in heartbreaking fashion, following the two-point loss to Port Adelaide in round four.

Sydney controlled much of the game on the back of its dominance around the contest, winning clearances by nine, contested possessions by 25 and inside 50s by 15.

However, the GIANTS never wilted, making the most of every opportunity when it counted.

Luke Parker was colossal for the home team, racking up 33 disposals and 11 clearances to go with what appeared a match-icing goal early in the last term.

Lance Franklin, Will Hayward and Logan McDonald all kicked three goals, while Chad Warner and Peter Ladhams were also impressive for Sydney.

The GIANTS led by five points at the first change and 10 at the half, but Sydney looked to have arrested total control with a six-goal third term.

The first half was a contrast of styles as Sydney won most things in tight, while the GIANTS looked dangerous when they got the ball to the outside in space.

Despite having six less opportunities inside forward 50, the visitors led at the first two changes, with Greene and Xavier O'Halloran each kicking two goals.

O'Halloran's second was a work of art, as he calmly slotted a set shot from the junction of the 50m arc and left boundary line.

The Giants threatened to open up a larger lead before Franklin helped arrest the momentum with a series of powerful marks that led to two goals and an uncharacteristic miss from close range.
