The GIANTS would like to congratulate Chloe Dalton OAM on an incredible sporting career and thank her for her valued contributions to the club after announcing her retirement from AFLW.
Recognised as one of the most accomplished athletes in Australian female sport, Dalton has called time on her chapter as an AFLW athlete.
One of Australia’s few triple sport elite athletes, Dalton has hung up the boots following a stellar career which saw her play at the elite level in Australian rules football, basketball, and rugby 7s where she won an Olympic gold medal as part of the Australian team at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
A trailblazer for women’s sport both on and off the field, Dalton’s playing career ends after 32 AFLW games across both the GIANTS and the Blues over seven seasons.
Highlighting her sporting prowess, Dalton made the switch to AFLW not long after her gold-medal winning feats at the Rio Olympics, signing with Carlton in 2018 before making her AFLW debut in the 2019 season.
Quick to show her worth, Dalton finished runner-up in the Blues’ best and fairest in just her second season before joining the GIANTS in 2022 where her talent and leadership were huge additions to the club’s emerging group.
After overcoming a tough run with injury across her first two seasons, Dalton was fully fit and firing in the 2023 AFLW season where she starred across half-back for the GIANTS to finish seventh in the Gabrielle Trainor Medal.
Although injuries restricted her to just 16 games across four seasons in orange and charcoal, Dalton showed that at the peak of her powers she was one of the GIANTS’ most dynamic and important players, with her running power and her skill making her one of the AFLW’s most lethal weapons out of defence.
Also playing topflight basketball in the WNBL prior to her rugby and AFLW careers, Dalton’s impact goes far beyond her physical performances, with the 31-year-old being a driving force in advocating for the growth of female sport as both an author and founder of The Female Athlete Project.
GIANTS Executive General Manager of AFLW and Football Operations, Alison Zell, congratulated Dalton on her AFLW career.
“On behalf of everyone at the GIANTS, we congratulate Chloe on everything she has achieved during her time as an AFLW athlete and we wish Chloe and her family all the very best with what comes next,” Zell said.
“Chloe’s impact both on and off the field for the GIANTS has been profound and she’ll leave a lasting legacywith her teammates, coaches and staff.
“While her AFLW playing career comes to an end, she will always be a GIANT and we are excited about what lies next for Chloe as she continues to promote and advocate for women in sport and help inspire the next generation of young female athletes.”
