His opponents included James Bartel and James Kelly.

The midfielder had an interrupted preseason after having his appendix removed, but his form has been building and he played nine out of 10 games this season.

Giants Head Coach Kevin Sheedy said the NAB AFL Rising Star nomination was a fitting reward for Shiel who had enjoyed a very consistent season.

"After an injury interrupted pre-season, Dylan has shown the great talent we knew he had when we selected him and he has been one of the keys in our midfield along with Callan Ward, Tom Scully, Stephen Conilgio. Toby Greene and Taylor Adams," Sheedy said.

Dylan was recruited from the Edithvale-Aspendale Junior Football Club and the Dandenong Stingrays. He came to the Giants in 2011 as a 17-year-old access selection.

He represented Vic Country in the 2009 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships and the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. He was a member of the 2009 AIS-AFL Academy squad.

Dylan is the fourth Giant to be nominated for the NAB AFL Rising Star this season following Jeremy Cameron (Round Two), Tomas Bugg (Round Five) and Stephen Coniglio (Round Seven).

The 2012 NAB AFL Rising Star will receive a personal investment folio and a dedicated personal banker, courtesy of NAB.

NAB will recognise the junior clubs that helped foster the early careers of the nominated players. Each of the 23 clubs will receive a NAB Club Recognition Award, a package of practical resources designed to assist them in developing future champions. Included this year is a life saving St John defibrillator as part of the St John Heart Start program.

The NAB AFL Rising Star is the pinnacle of the NAB AFL Rising Stars Program, which supports grassroots players and football communities and helps young Australians fulfil their dream of playing in the AFL.
