Western Sydney sports fans were treated to a bumper weekend of football with three games spread across the region over the weekend.

The finest young talent in the country descended on Blacktown International Sportspark with NSW/ACT, Vic Country, Queensland and Western Australia competing in Round One of the U18 NAB National Championships.

The U18 NSW/ACT Rams squad included twenty-seven members of the Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy, who were narrowly beaten by Vic Country.

At the same time the UWS GIANTS were taking on their western Sydney neighbors, Sydney Hills Eagles at Rouse Hill in the NEAFL Eastern Conference.

The UWS GIANTS side included eleven members of the Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy with seven residing in Western Sydney.

The weekend was capped off on Sunday with the Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy took on the Sydney Swans Academy at Blacktown International Sportspark in the AFL Academy Series.

Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy Manager, Lachlan Buszard says the weekends event shows the rise of AFL in Western Sydney and the work both the GIANTS and AFL NSW/ACT are putting in to grow the game in the region.

“On the weekend we have a number of Western Sydney players playing at the highest level across the NSW/ACT Rams, UWS GIANTS and Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy.

"As part of our Academy program we have a Sudanese former soccer player from Western Sydney who has fallen in love with our game, and a rugby league convert from South West Sydney.

"We are providing opportunities for quality athletes from the Western Sydney region, and through our development pathways and Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy are developing players so that they reach their potential and become the best players they can possibly be,” said Buszard.
