After Harry Himmelberg was overlooked in the 2014 draft he had a choice.

Option A: Move from Wagga to Brisbane with his family, find a new club and keep playing football there.

Option B: Move to Canberra on his own, taking up an offer to stay on with the GIANTS Academy as a 19-year-old, and take another shot that way.

In the latest episode of Becoming GIANT, presented by Bingo Industries, Himmelberg explains why he decided to head out on his own.

Moving to Queensland – outside of the GIANTS’ zone – would have left the club unable to match Adelaide’s first-round bid for Himmelberg in the 2015 draft.

But with the help of former GIANTS Academy coach Jason Saddington, he was set up to play for Eastlake (now Canberra Demons) in the NEAFL in 2015, remaining eligible.

“They pretty much said to me, no promises, but if you start playing good footy we’ll play you overage in the (national) carnival and see how you go,” said Himmelberg, who worked as a cabinet maker before getting a retail job selling suits.

“It was pretty hard to move to Canberra, to be honest. I was with a host family for the first bit, and lived with a couple of boys from the football club after that.

“It wasn’t easy. My diet was a lot different than it is now with the budget I had, and stuff like that.

“But I sort of just thought, there’s not going to be a better opportunity than this now, and (I knew) if I put in the work and got back to what I knew I could be physically, that I’d be a chance.

“That whole year was my turnaround year, I guess.”

Himmelberg is one of a number GIANTS to have told the story behind his journey to the GIANTS in Becoming GIANT.

Defenders Lachlan Keeffe and Aidan Corr will feature in upcoming episodes.
