With just one day remaining until the GWS GIANTS take on the Gold Coast Suns and Sydney Swans, a second GIANT squad has been announced. This team, made up of pro-athletes, leading business men and women, faithful GIANTS supporters, GIANT board members and the yellow wiggle, will take to the field in a fourth AFL match on NAB Cup night.
The GIANTS inaugural celebrity squad will play against a Sydney Swans celebrity team at Blacktown Olympic Park tomorrow night to raise money for local community football clubs who have been affected by the floods. After illustrious starts to each of their careers, the celebrity team have had a quiet pre-season and have done no pre-season camps or training leading into their touch football match.
Lining up for the GIANTS will be:
1. Paul Kelly (Past Player)
2. Stephen Silvagni (Past Player)
3. Graeme Allan (Past Player and GWS Executive member)
4. Mark Arbib (Minister for Sport, Minister for Indigenouse Employment and Economic Development and Minister for Social Housing and Homelessness)
5. Tony Shepherd (GWS Board)
6. Gus Seebeck (GWS Board)
7. Matt Wiesner (Skoda)
8. Bill Crichton (Sanyo Solar)
9. Peter Goode (Transfield Services)
10. Chris Larsen (Ironbark Asset Management)
11. Sam Moran (Yellow Wiggle)
12. Jessi Miley-Dyer (Pro Surfer)
13. Felicity Harley (Editor, Womens Health)
14. Travis Crawley (GIANTS Foundation Member)
GIANTS coach Kevin Sheedy was optimistic about the celebrity side’s chances against the Swan’s squad on Saturday night despite their lack of preparation and also had some suggestions on how the squad could improve their list if they choose to play together again.
“We’ve got a lot of skill in the side. At the moment it looks like we need a little bit more intelligence in the team and also a bit more brawn. If we got some more females in there we might have a little more strength than we do now.
“I don’t think that their lack of training will hurt them tomorrow night, if they’ve got good instincts they should work together well.
“Knowing that Tom Harley is such a fair player, I think Felicity with be pretty ruthless. You’ll often find that if someone is very polite and fair they will marry a tough, ruthless player. That will work to our advantage because we need some flair in our side,” he said.
Sheedy said that GWS GIANTS Chairman, Tony Shepherd would be one to watch out on the field.
“Given that Tony Shepherd has dug so many holes around Sydney, I think he’ll really burrow in and be the gopher of the team. He’s got my tip for best on ground.”
Travis Crawley from Quakers Hill has been announced as the lucky GIANTS Foundation Member who will line up in the celebrity squad after being notified yesterday. Travis is originally from Darwin and moved to Western Sydney six years ago.
“I saw the competition on the facebook page. At the time I remember thinking that would be great but didn’t give it a lot of thought after that until I got a call from the club.
“I’m very excited, it will be amazing.”
