Saturday April 3 10:15am Team GWS v Northern Knights Blacktown Olympic Park Eastern Road Rooty Hill
On Saturday April 3, Team GWS will make history with their TAC Cup side taking to the field for the very first time, playing the Northern Knights at Blacktown Olympic Park.
The match marks a significant milestone in the establishment of Team GWS as they prepare to enter the AFL competition in 2012.
The developing side will be coached by Team GWS High Performance Manager Alan McConnell, who has been working with the squad since December.
McConnell said that this weekend’s game is an exciting step for all involved.
“This really is a history making game. While it’s only a small step in our journey, it’s one that can never be repeated. It is a significant step for all of Team GWS.
“It’s one of those occasions that you will talk about with your kids and your grandkids.”
Of the 22 players lining up on Saturday, seven have joined Team GWS this year under the AFL list concessions awarded to the club. The remaining players are currently scholarship holders with the 16 AFL clubs.
“We have boys from all across the state representing Team GWS. They come from as far south as Ardlethan to right up around Newcastle and everywhere in between. In addition we’ve also got two young Indigenous players from the Northern Territory,” said McConnell.
“There are a lot of people that have made sacrifices for this. Kids have left their homes to pursue their dream. Some of our players travel up to three hours each way just to make training on any given night.” McConnell is thankful for the support the team has received from all of the staff and volunteers alike. “This is an incredible journey for these young kids, and also for all of the staff and volunteers that make up Team GWS, all of whom have made a significant contribution making this happen.”
Over the TAC Cup season, Team GWS will offer more than 55 players the opportunity to showcase their talent through this elite competition to both Team GWS selectors and the wider AFL community.
This Saturday, the selected side will have its first opportunity to pitch themselves against the top players from Victoria.
“This is a very young and inexperienced team, but they will not be lacking courage nor commitment. I’ll be telling them to enjoy the experience and play for the team. Just beat your opponent and use the ball,” said McConnell.
By taking to the field on Saturday these players will leave a legacy not just for Team GWS but also for the footprint of AFL across NSW and the ACT now and for the future.
