Defender Harry Oliver will make his AFL debut this Sunday against Waalitj Marawar, with the exciting teenager rewarded for his strong form and continual development.
The 19-year-old has impressed across recent weeks in the side’s VFL team, including a standout performance in last week’s loss to the Bombers, to earn his opportunity at the top level this week.
A composed and creative distributor across half-back, Oliver has averaged 22 disposals per game in his three VFL appearances so far this season, showcasing the poise, decision making and line-braking speed that made him one of the most exciting defenders in the 2024 Draft class.
Selected with pick No.19 in the 2024 AFL Draft, the left-footer arrived at the club with a strong résumé following a brilliant junior career. Oliver was named an under-18 All-Australian in 2024 after starring for Victoria Metro, where his elite kicking and ability to set up play from defence became trademarks of his game.
He capped off an outstanding season by helping Sandringham Dragons claim the premiership, while also earning selection in the Coates Talent League Team of the Year.
Oliver showed promising signs during his second pre-season campaign over the summer, with his form and promise allowing him to get a taste of AFL action in practice matches against the Pies and Swans earlier this year.
The round 10 debutant learnt of his debut after captain Toby Greene got all the players to check under their seat during a scheduled team meeting on Friday afternoon, with a golden ticket (sticky note) placed under Oliver’s seat stating ‘Return Trip to Optus Stadium.’
GIANTS Executive General Manager of Football Jason McCartney said Oliver had earned his opportunity through his consistency, professionalism and impact at VFL level.
“Harry’s worked hard throughout the year and we’ve been pleased with the way he’s continued to develop over the past 18 months,” McCartney said.
“He’s shown some really good signs with his composure and ball use, and he’s had a solid run of form in the VFL over recent weeks.
“We’re looking forward to seeing him take his opportunity at AFL level this weekend.”
Oliver becomes the club’s third debutant of the season, joining fellow 2024 draftee Ollie Hannaford as well as exciting young forward Phoenix Gothard.
The GIANTS will close out the round 10 action on Sunday evening, when they take on Waalitj Marawar at Optus Stadium.
