The GIANTS will make history in 2020 when they become the first club ever to stage an AFLW/AFL double header for premiership points.

In what will be a season of firsts for the GIANTS in 2020, the club’s AFLW round seven clash with Geelong will not only be the AFLW team’s first-ever game at GIANTS Stadium but it will be played ahead of the GIANTS’ round one AFL Premiership match against the Cats.

“The club is delighted to be able to host this historic double-header at GIANTS Stadium which is one of the AFL’s premier venues for fan experience,” GIANTS CEO David Matthews said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the best of the AFLW and AFL competitions on what will be a significant occasion for the club and the code.”

The GIANTS will also host an AFLW home game in the Riverina for the first time in round five as part of a huge weekend of footy in Wagga Wagga with the GIANTS to host Richmond the day before the AFL team play in the Marsh Community Series at the same venue

The Wagga game will mark a homecoming for GIANTS AFLW stars Alyce Parker (Holbrook) and Jodie Hicks (Hay) as they return to Robertson Oval in GIANTS colours for the first time.

The GIANTS open their 2020 AFLW campaign in a round one match against new expansion side the Gold Coast Suns at Blacktown International Sportspark, before returning to the same venue a fortnight later to take on fellow newcomers the West Coast Eagles in round three.

“With 17 of our players coming from across NSW and the ACT, it’s important that the next generation of female footballers get to see local players in action,” Mr Matthews said.

“We’re excited to continue to bring top-level women’s football to a great venue at Blacktown International Sportspark as well as Wagga Wagga, where both our men’s and women’s teams will be playing.”

The GIANTS will also play games in Launceston against the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos in round two and at the VU Whitten Oval for a Friday night clash with the Western Bulldogs for the first time.

For the first time the 2020 NAB AFLW season won’t include a home game at UNSW Canberra Oval with the venue unavailable due to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

“We would have loved to continue our record of playing at UNSW Canberra Oval,” Mr Matthews said.

“However, with the AFLW season coinciding with the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, UNSW Canberra Oval is unavailable at this time. We look forward to resuming our strong record in Canberra in the seasons to come.”
