There are few people who have seen more GIANTS’ matches than Georges Hall resident Richard Kolodziej.
Since the GIANTS began in 2012, when he joined up as a foundation member, Richard has travelled thousands of miles to see the orange and charcoal teams across the country.
Having sat through numerous thrashings in the early years to witnessing dramatic finals wins in better times, Richard has seen it all across the past 14 seasons.
Being a Swans fan and member for many years, but born and bred in Western Sydney, Richard now sits firmly in the GIANTS camp. He estimates he has been to well over 150 GIANTS games across the AFL and AFLW, including trips to Canberra and interstate.
“I’ve been to most Sydney home games for the men’s and women’s, and I’ve also done many interstate trips for finals. And, I try to get to Manuka for the Canberra games whenever I can.” explains Richard.
“I’ve certainly done the miles over the years via car or plane. I even did the train to Canberra on a couple of occasions.
“I’m already planning for Gather Round. I’ve been to the previous three already.
“I try to get to member events and been to several best and fairest nights. It’s always fun to engage with the club.”
When it comes to memorable games, Richard was happy to reminisce about both ends of the emotional roller coaster that goes with being a footy fan.
“The first win against the Swans in 2014 came unexpectedly in a game halted by lightning. It signalled the start of competitive Derby clashes,” Richard recalls.
“A qualifying final win against the Swans at Stadium Australia in front of 60,000 spectators was unforgettable.
“With the highs came the lows and a preliminary final loss in 2016 to the Bulldogs was a nail biter because it was so close, it was gut wrenching to lose though. The Bulldogs had a charmed run through that finals series!
“However, beating the Magpies by four points in front of 90,000 at the MCG in 2019 to make the grand final was so special.
“I also remember the snow game against Hawthorn in freezing conditions in Canberra, that same year we made the grand final.”
Richard admits that when the GIANTS take on the Swans in the Battle of the Bridge, he always dons the orange and charcoal rather than the red and white.
“My kids call me a turncoat, but I am definitely in the GIANTS camp. I see a number of Swans fans who do the same, simply because they relate to the GIANTS more,” he said.
“Being from Western Sydney I do relate more to the GIANTS. I mean it’s so much easier to get out to Homebush and enjoy a night out, much easier and more convenient than the longer trek to the SCG. The later start for night games there means a home return closer to midnight!”
Richard was one of 37,705 GIANTS members in 2025, and has already signed up for 2026, hoping the club can win that elusive Premiership Cup.
