Western Sydney product Caitlin Fletcher’s persistence and passion have paid off, with the 21-year-old named to make her AFLW debut in the GIANTS’ season-opening clash against Essendon in Canberra on Saturday.

A replacement signing for recently retired club legend Pepa Randall, Fletcher’s debut marks a significant milestone in a journey years in the making — from local footy and train-on roles to earning her spot in the AFLW.

No stranger to the GIANTS environment, Fletcher has spent the past two seasons involved with the club’s AFLW program as a train-on player, impressing with her work ethic and continual development. She also featured in the club’s VFLW side last year and was named in the extended AFLW squad for Pride Round after standing out during the 2024 campaign.

A strong-bodied utility who can also play as a midfielder or down back, Fletcher most recently played for North Melbourne’s VFLW side earlier this year before being picked up by the GIANTS in the pre-season, as the replacement for Randall.

Fletcher played locally in the AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division with the Parramatta Goannas and also represented AFL NSW/ACT in a state clash against Tasmania last year where she was named best on ground.

GIANTS AFLW head coach Cam Bernasconi said Fletcher’s debut was a reward for years of dedication and growth.

“We’ve watched ‘Fletch’ develop over the past couple of seasons and she’s earned every bit of this opportunity,” Bernasconi said.

“She’s worked incredibly hard as a train-on and VFLW player, stayed ready, and continued to raise her standards. To see her now step onto the AFLW stage is a special moment — not just for her, but for everyone who’s seen the work she’s put in behind the scenes.

“Caitlin is tough around the contest and brings a real intensity and physicality that lifts the group, and we know she’ll bring that edge when she runs out on Saturday.”

Fletcher joins Irish recruit Grace Kos and first-round draftees Sara Howley and Grace Martin as upcoming AFLW debutants for the GIANTS’ exciting round one clash with the Bombers at Corroboree Group Oval, Manuka on Saturday.
