AFLW ROUND 10

Power v GIANTS
Saturday, November 4 at 2:35pm CDT/3:05pm EDT
Alberton Oval | Kaurna Country

State of Play:

It’s the final round of a frustrating 2023 NAB AFLW season for the GIANTS with a tough draw meaning the young GIANTS side has fallen short of their own expectations in their eighth season. Against one of the newest sides in the competition, the GIANTS will be looking for their first away win of the season when they take on the Power on Saturday afternoon.

The Opposition:

The Power have also had a frustrating season, sitting in 17th place with one win for the year. The focus for this week for the Power will no doubt be the retirement of skipper and AFLW trailblazer Erin Phillips, who announced earlier this week that Saturday’s game will be her last. The 38-year-old retires after a career including three premierships, two league best and fairest medals and All-Australian honours on three occasions.

Recent History:

These two sides have never faced off in a NAB AFL Women’s match for premiership points after the Power entered the competition last season. The two sides met each other for the first time in a practice match ahead of season eight but it was hard to get a gauge on the match up given the Power played more than 30 players across the four-quarter match.

GIANTS Player to Watch:

The 2023 season has seen a host of GIANTS reach the 50-game milestone with inaugural GIANT Rebecca Beeson and recruit Jas Grierson both set to reach the important milestone this week. 27-year-old Beeson will become the fourth GIANT to play 50 games for the club after being drafted to the GIANTS in the 2016 inaugural AFLW draft. The local product received a Rising Star nomination in the opening round of the 2018 season and was also crowned the club's Gabrielle Trainor Medal in 2019. Meanwhile, Grierson reaches the milestone at her third club. Still only 25, Grierson played 32 games across the Melbourne Demons and North Melbourne before joining the GIANTS ahead of season six.

In the Mix:

GIANTS young gun and leader Georgia Garnett faces a fitness test ahead of the final-round match after being a late withdrawal from last week’s clash with the Suns with a knee injury. Young forward Caitlin Miller was her replacement for that game while Madison Brazendale and Tess Cattle were the other emergencies for that match.

Team Selection:

The GIANTS will name their round 10 team at 6:20pm on Thursday at gwsgiants.com.au
