The GIANTS - with 14 listed players - were defeated by Casey in the VFL on Sunday afternoon.
Matt Flynn was a standout for the orange and charcoal, but it wasn't enough as the GIANTS fell to a 20.14 (134) to 4.14 (38) defeat at Casey Fields.
“To be quite frank I was disappointed in the performance,” GIANTS VFL Coach Wayne Cripps said post-match.
“It was a frustrating day but I think it’ll be a great learning curve for our group moving forward.”
Cripps shared his assessments of the AFL listed players who played in the match.
AFL Listed Players:
1. Phil Davis
24 disposals, 4 marks
It was great to have Phil back. It was a tough day for all defenders, but I thought he defended really well. He was the general down back and his leadership is invaluable at VFL level.
5. Aaron Cadman
16 disposals, 4 marks
Aaron competed hard all afternoon. We didn’t help our key forwards with our ball movement, but he competed well in the air and his follow up work was great. His pressure was a real stand out.
10. Jacob Wehr
15 disposals, 4 marks
I thought he was super throughout the entire contest. He was one of the few that played to our system and his effort and attitude was of the highest standard.
18. Conor Stone
17 disposals, 1 goal
Conor’s starting to get some real continuity in his game at VFL level. His speed and power continue to be at the forefront and he’s close to having a really big impact.
20. James Peatling
27 disposals, 6 tackles, 9 clearances
Offensively he gave us great spread from the contest, and he competed hard. Like all our midfielders, the ability to want to defend and transition defensively wasn’t there for the majority of the afternoon.
21. Leek Aleer
7 disposals, 4 marks
We were really happy with Leek; he came up against some great AFL key forwards in Josh Schache and Jacob van Rooyen. He did a great job and we can see his confidence building each week.
24. Harry Rowston
18 disposals, 7 clearances, 1 goal
Similar to James (Peatling) he was fantastic offensively but wasn’t at his best defensively and the Demons were able to capitalise on that. It was a great learning experience for him.
29. Cameron Fleeton
21 disposals, 8 marks
He does everything right every week and stood up down back again. He defended well and joined in on our offensive ball movement which has been a real growth for him. He’s developed into a genuine leader and you can’t question his intent.
30. Matt Flynn
1 goal, 19 disposals, 33 hit-outs
Similar to Jacob (Wehr) I thought his attitude was super. He competed hard all afternoon and won the battle in the ruck. His follow up work across the ground was a highlight and he’s having a big impact at VFL level.
31. Toby McMullin
13 disposals, 6 tackles
We were really happy with him. He’s playing with the speed we know he has, and he seems to be really enjoying his football. For a first year he’s tracking in the right direction.
35. Max Gruzewski
10 disposals, 1 goals
Similar to Aaron, it was a tough day in terms of the way the ball was moving forward. He competed hard all day and was good in the air. His follow up work has been a real growth of his this year but unfortunately his opportunities were limited.
41. Nick Madden
19 hit-outs, 12 disposals
Competed hard. His follow up work was great and he’s continuing to learn with his craft and positioning around the ground.
42. Jason Gillbee
18 disposals, 6 marks
It was a tough day for him. He played in a new position across half-back and he’ll gain a lot from that experience. His drive out of the back half was a real strength and we want to see more of that moving forward.
45. Wade Derksen
12 disposals, 4 marks
Wade will be the first to admit it wasn’t his best performance of the year. He’s been fantastic for us this season and has kicked some big goals at VFL level. Similar to Aaron and Max, he had limited opportunity as a key forward.
