Just over 10 years ago, Harry James Angus - a jazz singer-songwriter from iconic Australian band 'The Cat Empire' - wrote the greatest club song in Australian sport.

An accomplished trumpet player, Angus wrote The Big Big Sound after a friend suggested he make a submission to a competition to help the AFL’s newest team decide on a team song.

Team songs in the AFL competition have a storied history with influences ranging from the French national anthem (the Lions), hymns (the Crows) and musicals (the Bombers) with the West Coast Eagles recently updating their song with the help of fellow Australian artists Birds of Tokyo.

After Angus’ submission was heard by members of the GIANTS' board, he was invited to the club to work with coach Kevin Sheedy and the inaugural playing squad to finesse the lyrics.

Harry Angus performed the Big Big Sound at the 2019 AFL Grand Final Eve Function.

The now infamous 'Never Surrender' line was added during these collaborative sessions and the song has since become an important part of the club's culture, while the 'Never Surrender' ethos is now embedded in the fabric of the club.

Angus said he wanted the song to take fans back to the early days.

“It’s important to have an understanding of how old-time music works because it’s not about making it sound old-fashioned,” Angus said in 2012.

“It’s also about making it sound exciting at the same time. You don’t want to make it sound old-fashioned and boring.”

On February 16, 2012, the song was unveiled as the GIANTS’ official team song on the eve of the club’s inaugural season.

Since its release it has widely been considered a ‘banger’, but it was when the GIANTS qualified for the 2019 Grand Final that it really took off.

The Big Big Sound took over the footballing world, sweeping social media and going viral amongst fans who added the tune into TV shows, movies and memes.

Scenes from the Simpsons, Friends and The Office were suddenly interrupted with the unlikely sound of the iconic GIANTS trumpets.
