Scans have revealed defender Lachlan Keeffe has torn the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during Saturday’s win over the Bombers.

Keeffe injured himself in the final minute of the clash with subsequent assessment revealing the serious injury.

It’s the same knee Keeffe suffered an ACL tear in in 2012 while playing at Collingwood.

GIANTS Head of Medical Cullan Ball said:

“It’s obviously devastating news for Lachie and we’re throwing our arms around him.

“He was injured very late in the game and assessed following the match.

“Further assessment on Sunday indicated there may be an issue with the ACL and subsequent scans revealed Lachie will require a knee reconstruction.

“He’ll head to Melbourne on Wednesday to see Dr Julian Feller and we expect him to undergo surgery later this week.”

Keeffe, 31, signed a one-year contract extension with the club last week to take him through to the end of 2022.

Jesse Hogan (calf), Tom Hutchesson (hamstring) and Matt Buntine (concussion) will all be tests for this week and required to get through training to be available for selection in round nine.

Hogan missed last week’s match with calf tightness while Buntine is undergoing the usual 12-day concussion protocols following the round seven win over the Crows.

Hutchesson is on his way back from a hamstring injury suffered in late March.

The GIANTS take on the Tigers on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium with the two sides to face off in a VFL match at the Swinburne Centre in Melbourne earlier in the day.
