Match Details

Swans v GIANTS
Saturday, April 17 at 4:35pm
SCG

Milestone

All Australian defender Nick Haynes is set to play his 150th AFL match on Saturday, qualifying him for life membership of the GIANTS. The 28-year-old was selected at pick seven in the club’s inaugural 2011 draft and was recruited as a forward before going on to become one of the best intercepting defenders in the game.

Sydney Derby Cup and Brett Kirk Medal

Saturday's round five match will be the 20th edition of the Sydney Derby.

Like the GIANTS, the Sydney Derby is in its 10th year with the GIANTS winning seven of the 19 clashes and the Swans 12.

The first Sydney Derby was played in round one, 2012 with the Swans victorious by 63 points at ANZ Stadium. The two clubs have faced off in two finals with the GIANTS victorious in both.

The last Sydney Derby was won by the Swans at Optus Stadium in Perth, ending a three-game streak by the GIANTS.

The player judged best on ground will be awarded the Brett Kirk Medal. Callan Ward, Josh Kennedy, Lance Franklin and Luke Parker have all won the medal twice while former Swan Kieren Jack won it three times in his career. Parker won the medal in the last meeting between these two sides.

VFL Season Opener

The GIANTS will open their season as part of the new-look VFL competition against the Swans at Tramways Oval (Lakeside Oval) opposite the SCG on Saturday at 12:10pm.

Getting There

With thousands of supporters expected to attend Saturday’s derby clash against the Swans, Giants fans are urged to plan ahead and consider all the available travel options including driving with their groups, public transport, catching rideshare and taxis or walking for shorter trips.

Nearby parking is available (flat rate event parking fees apply) within short walking distance of the SCG at:

  • Entertainment Quarter car park, open 24 hours. Entry via Errol Flynn Blvd.
  • EP2 and EP3 Grass car parks on Driver Avenue, open from 12:35pm. Entry to EP2 (Kippax) via Moore Park Rd and entry to EP3 (Showground) via Lang Rd. $30 flat rate fee per car (EFTPOS only).
  • Sydney Boys & Girls High School car park, open from 2pm. Entry off Cleveland St.

Gates open from 2.35pm ahead of first bounce from 4.35pm so make the most of the day with plenty of local venues to enjoy before and after the match in short walking distance of the SCG. Fans are urged to arrive early to secure a parking space as traffic will be heavy on roads approaching the precinct and parking will be in high demand. You can find real-time traffic conditions at livetraffic.com.

Light rail services and express shuttle buses will run frequently between Central and Moore Park before and after the game, however please be patient as queues will be long especially after the final whistle, so consider walking instead via the Albert ‘Tibby’ Cotter Walkway and Devonshire Street to avoid the queues.

Fans travelling from the North Shore are reminded that due to trackwork in the city, T1 North Shore Line trains will end at Wynyard. Change at Wynyard for light rail services to Moore Park leaving from George Street. If you're travelling from the Inner West buses replace trains between Ashfield and Central so plan ahead and allow extra time to connect with trams to Moore Park.

In line with NSW Health advice, it’s strongly recommended to wear a face mask when travelling on transport services. Sit or stand on the ‘green dots’, when possible and check real-time capacity indicators where available. Additional queuing measures, signage and staff will be in place around Central Station, Moore Park transport hubs and the SCG to safely manage crowds arriving and leaving the game so be patient, practise physical distancing while in queues and follow the directions of staff on site.
