Ahead of the GIANTS first match at ANZ Stadium on Sunday, GIANTS reporter Beck Mills caught up with #8 Jeremy Cameron to see how the team was feeling, how they’ve been preparing for the match and, very importantly, what Jeremy is hoping to get for his eighteenth birthday on Friday.
So Jeremy, you guys have just come out of the NAB Cup and NAB Challenge, what did that experience give the team?
Those matches were great. We’d done a lot of training together over the pre season so it was a good feeling when we finally got to go out and play some games as a group.
We’d never played at AFL level so it was a bit of a shock to the system but it was good to get on the field and give it a go. I got to play in all of those matches so I really got to see how the team grew in that time.
We learnt a lot about the speed of the game and had a crack against some bigger bodies so hopefully that’s something that we can take into the game against the Swans’ reserves this weekend.
What have you been doing in the last two weeks to prepare for Sunday’s game?
We haven’t had any games for a couple of weeks but we’ve been training hard. Running is something that we’ve really been working on. We need to be able to run out the whole game.
We’re playing at ANZ Stadium on Sunday and that will be the biggest arena that I’ve ever played in so that will be really exciting.
You’re eighteen on Friday, along with Simon Tunbridge and seven of your teammates have also turned eighteen in the last couple of months, what have you been doing for all of the birthdays?
Yeah, we’ve had a lot of birthdays. We usually go out for a nice dinner as a group. We make sure that as many boys in the team are there as possible, not just a few of us, so we’re there to support each other. The boys say a few words after dinner then the cake comes out and we all sing Happy Birthday.
Who always yells out the “hip-hip” in Happy Birthday?
Haha, Benny Casley usually pipes up.
How do the coaches feel about all the cake?
The boys have actually been really good with the cake (laughs), they don’t indulge much, and we just have a little bit of it.
What are you doing for your birthday on Friday; are there any presents you’re hoping for?
I think we’re having dinner at Baywok for both mine and Tunners’ birthday.
I was home last weekend so mum and dad had a party for me at home with about 40 family and friends, which was really nice. They all gave me heaps of chocolate but I couldn’t eat any of it so I just gave it away.
I’m not too worried about getting anything present wise on Friday; I’m just looking forward to growing up and finally being eighteen. A win on the weekend would be good too.
