Balancing her playing career with her coaching aspirations has been the biggest challenge for Alicia Eva since her move to the GIANTS three years ago.

Captain of the AFLW side, Eva has also taken up a development coaching role in the men’s program since moving to the club, working with the backline.

The opportunity to develop as a coach was a key reason behind her reason to join the GIANTS, which she explains in the latest episode of Becoming GIANT, presented by Bingo Industries.

“The last 18 months I’ve pretty much looked like a sponge. I’m in match committee taking in all the information and it’s been amazing for me,” Eva said.

“I’m constantly thinking about how we can do things differently, or how we can adapt that or take this idea from what the boys are doing and run it in the girls’ program.

“I’ve had to really work on getting that balance right between being a coach and imparting my knowledge, and also being a captain and being a player that wants to play good footy.

“That’s my challenge that I need to keep working on, that’s my area of development, learning when to switch on in that coach mode and then when to switch into: ‘OK, what’s my role, my role now is just to play good footy.”

Eva is one of a number of GIANTS to have told the story behind their journey to the club in the podcast series.

Small forward Brent Daniels and 2019 club champion Tim Taranto are set to feature in upcoming episodes.
