Harry Perryman briefly considered pursuing a cricket career before deciding football was the better fit for him.

Perryman was 16 – and a member of the GIANTS Academy, having grown up on a farm in country NSW – when he found himself having to make a choice between the sports.

The now 21-year-old, drafted at No. 14 in 2016, discusses his decision in the latest episode of Becoming GIANT, presented by Bingo Industries.

“I remember in my 16th year (Academy training) was pretty hard. I’d never really trained much, to be honest,” Perryman said.

“I remember rocking up and going ‘oh geez, I don’t know if I like this,’ but I’m happy I stuck at it and got a bit fitter.

“I enjoyed playing cricket and I had to choose when I was in the 16s. I had a cricket carnival or a GIANTS carnival to go to and I kind of told cricket I didn’t really want to do that.

“I remember at the time it was pretty hard, because I love playing cricket and I kind of just thought footy was my best option.

“There’s a lot more spots in footy than cricket, so I thought I’d go down that path.”

Perryman became a GIANT after the club matched Adelaide’s bid of pick 14 for him, but a handful of other clubs came to visit the family farm in Collingullie in the lead-up to the draft.

“I reckon every club got lost trying to get out there. I remember having to ring them up and tell them where to go,” Perryman recalled.

“I think it was North Melbourne – it was really wet that year and it was actually flooded. They couldn’t get in, so we had to go pick them up and drive them through the water.

“I always had a feeling the GIANTS were going to match the bid, but it was good to just have a few of them come out.”

Perryman is the latest GIANT to tell the story behind his journey to the club in the podcast series, with Brent Daniels, AFLW captain Alicia Eva and Tim Taranto to feature in upcoming episodes.
