The GIANTS wish to express our support for those impacted by the current bushfire crisis and our gratitude to the firefighters, emergency services and volunteers who are working so tirelessly to support those communities at risk.

The GIANTS are currently working through a range of initiatives targeted at assisting those impacted in the club’s key regions across Western Sydney, Southern New South Wales and the ACT, while also working closely with the AFL as part of an industry-wide approach to support those affected by the bushfires on a broader scale, as is GIANTS Netball with their national body.

The GIANTS are also exploring a number of ways to acknowledge the incredible work done by firefighters, emergency services and volunteers.

In the nation’s capital, the GIANTS will join forces with other sporting clubs from across the ACT under the banner of #weareone, to provide support for those impacted by the bushfires in areas close to Canberra, including the South Coast, Monaro and Southern Inland NSW.

The #weareone initiative will see the GIANTS work collaboratively with the Brumbies (rugby union), the Raiders (rugby league), the Capitals (basketball), the Cavalry (baseball), the Meteors (cricket), the Brave (ice-hockey) and Canberra United FC (soccer) to raise much-needed funds and assist with making the rebuilding process as effective as possible. #Weareone events will be scheduled throughout the year in order to provide support to the regional clubs who have lost equipment and infrastructure during this bushfire season, including AFL clubs along the south coast.

GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews said sporting clubs can play an important role in times of crisis.

“The scale and magnitude of the events of recent weeks is unparalleled and our AFL, AFLW and GIANTS Netball teams are committed to providing assistance to the many communities affected by these tragedies,” said Mr Matthews.

“As is the case across so much of the country, sport is the lifeblood of a number of the small communities that have been hardest hit and we want to ensure we stand alongside them throughout this harrowing period.

“The #weareone campaign will see the GIANTS come together with a number of clubs representing the ACT to use sport as a vehicle to help those in need. We are also working through a range of initiatives to provide support for those impacted by the New South Wales bushfires, with plans finalised in the coming days.”
