GIANTS midfielder Tom Scully will be sidelined for 10-12 weeks after successful surgery on a broken ankle on Sunday in Melbourne.

Scully, in his first game of the season, twisted awkwardly in a tackle in the first quarter and was taken from the ground on a stretcher.

Head of Athletic Performance David Joyce confirmed Scully will be looking to return to the field after the mid-season bye.

“He fractured his fibula, which is the narrow thin bone on the outside of your leg,” said Joyce.

“It was his right leg, so it was right down the bottom which is why we call it a broken ankle and he had other little things that we needed to clean up in there as well.

“He got operated on at the Epworth on Sunday and everything was done really, really well and we’re hopeful of seeing him back on the park in that 10-12 week range.”

Forward Zac Langdon suffered a broken hand in the same game and while he returned on Saturday to play out the game, the youngster will be sidelined for four weeks.

“This happened in the first few minutes of him being on the field, unfortunately young Zaccy fractured his metacarpal, so that’s the bone at the base of the finger on the little finger side of his left hand,” Joyce said.

“We’ve had the x-rays and are really comfortable with how that’s setting so we probably won’t operate on this one but I still think he’ll miss a month of footy because we want to make sure it’s set and healed really well.”

In good news for the club, veteran Ryan Griffen made a successful return to the field after a persistent ankle injury, playing half of Saturday’s NEAFL practice match.

The classy half-back looks set for an increased workload this weekend.

“Griff played half a game in the NEAFL and really pleasingly for us, is that he’s pulled up well so we expect him to train fully this week and play more game time this weekend.”

Star forward Toby Greene is a wait-and-see proposition for this week’s Sydney Derby XIV after withdrawing from the round two match with hamstring soreness.

“We just took a really conservative view with Toby, he just had a bit of soreness in his hammy at the back end of the week and we thought that it probably wasn’t worth risking,” Joyce said.

“We want to see him train and hopefully he puts his hand up for selection this week.”

The GIANTS take on the Swans at the SCG on Saturday at 7:25pm. The team will be named at 6:25pm on Thursday.
