The GIANTS are pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Nicks as senior assistant coach for the 2019 season.

Nicks joins the GIANTS after eight years at Port Adelaide, where he has spent the last two seasons as senior assistant coach under Ken Hinkley.

The 43-year old was one of the inaugural participants in the AFL’s Level Four Coaching program, which was designed to prepare assistant coaches looking to take the next step to a senior coaching role in the AFL.

Prior to his coaching career, Nicks played 175 games for the Sydney Swans before retiring in 2005.

GIANTS General Manager Football Wayne Campbell welcomed Nicks to the club.

“Matthew is a welcome addition to our football department and we’re delighted he’ll join us in the newly-created role of senior assistant coach,” said Campbell.

“We’ve been looking to expand our coaching group and with the wide range of skills and knowledge Matthew brings from his time at Port Adelaide, he’s the ideal candidate.

“We’ve got a really skilled and hardworking coaching group and Matthew’s appointment will complement them and support their continued development, while also working closely alongside Leon Cameron.”

Nicks said he's excited about this next step in his coaching career.

“I’m really looking forward to joining the GIANTS, who have an exciting group of players and coaches,” said Nicks.

“The club has a number of terrific people involved across the organisation and I see the GIANTS as being in a good position to be able to continue to push for success in the coming years.

“I’d like to thank the Port Adelaide Football Club for the opportunities they’ve given me and the experience I’ve gained working under Ken Hinkley.”

Nicks will relocate to Sydney with his fiancé Courtney and their three children Ethan, Isla and Harry before officially beginning with the GIANTS on November 1, 2018.
