The GIANTS have selected Maisy Evans (pick two) and Sophia Gaukrodger (pick 10) in the 2026 Telstra AFLW Pre-Season Draft.

Recruited from Bond University and the GIANTS Academy respectively, both Evans and Gaukrodger add athleticism and forward craft to the GIANTS’ side, having been identified for their consistency and drive.

The GIANTS were eligible for two selections in the inaugural draft, following the off-season retirements of stalwart Katherine Smith and midfielder Claire Ransom.

With a background in both rugby and netball, Evans’ athletic profile and aerial skills add important depth to the GIANTS’ young on-ball group.

Originally a St Kilda City junior, Evans has rapidly developed at the state level following a move to Queensland in 2024 and has already notched impressive stats through the start of the QAFL season, with three best player performances from three matches for Bond to commence the season.

Gaukrodger’s move to the GIANTS Academy in 2025 has likewise seen an increase in output, having spent more time in the midfield under Academy coach, now teammate, Alicia Eva.

The 19-year-old has averaged 23.3 disposals, four marks and eight tackles across three Talent League games so far in 2026.

GIANTS AFLW List Manager, Tyson Bourke, touted the duo’s resilience after both talents went undrafted in the 2025 National AFLW Draft.

“Sophia is a testament to resilience, given her football pathway throughout her junior years has not been linear,” Bourke said

"After moving to the GIANTS Academy, missing Allies selection, and then going undrafted in the 2025 AFLW Draft, Soph committed herself to working closely with the Academy coaches to take her game to another level.

“This growth has been evident in her performances, where she has consistently looked above the standard.

“Maisy has shown great improvement in her three games to start 2026, playing as a ruck and as an inside midfielder.

“Given her height and athletic base, we feel Maisy has the traits to continue that growth trajectory as she enters our program and the AFLW system.”

The GIANTS also wish to extend a congratulations to Lily Quigley, the former GIANTS Academy product who was selected by the Gold Coast SUNS at pick one.

Evans and Gaukrodger will join the club ahead of 2026 pre-season training, officially commencing next Monday, May 11.
