For Jarrod Duncan and his family, becoming part of the GIANTS family has transformed their love of footy into something bigger - a year-round connection to their club, their community and the game their kids adore.

Proud GIANTS members, the Duncans say the club’s presence in Canberra and its commitment to supporting junior footy has played a huge role in strengthening that connection.

“We signed up as GIANTS members in 2024 when we returned to Canberra. It’s the best way to go to live footy in town,” Jarrod Duncan said.

That passion for the GIANTS began through their involvement in local junior footy - a space where the club’s engagement and support are felt deeply by families across the region.

“The kids started Auskick with Ainslie Football Club six years ago. We also lived in Wagga for a few years, where the kids played with the Wagga Tigers, before we returned to Canberra.”

From Auskick through to match-day activities, the Duncans say junior footy has been a constant source of joy and connection.

“It’s great for the kids to get outdoors and learn to work as a team. It’s also fun to watch the kids practicing their skills, especially the ones they try to copy from AFL stars…. and the celebrations.”

What keeps them involved each season is the sense of belonging - something the GIANTS pride themselves on cultivating at every level.

“Out of all the sports the kids have played, junior footy has been the best at making sure everyone gets a go and gets something out of it. It’s also really nice to be part of the footy community and to see others out and about and on game day.”

One of the standout moments for the family came through a GIANTS initiative that gives junior clubs the chance to be part of the match-day experience.

“All the kids from our son’s team enjoyed getting dressed up in their kit and walking around the game. They felt like the stars of the show and loved getting to go on the field. Our little guy also got to do the Guard of Honour for the GIANTS as they ran out, which was a highlight of his year.”

It’s experiences like these - made possible through the club’s commitment to its fan base and junior footy - that inspired the Duncans to deepen their connection by becoming members. The memories they’ve made since have been unforgettable.

“Round 5, 2024 – the GIANTS beat St Kilda by 1 point, and the atmosphere was brilliant,” Duncan said of his favourite memory.

For Duncan, what keeps them renewing is the club culture and the passionate community the GIANTS have built.

“Even though GWS is a newer club, it has passionate fans and a great club culture. We love going to games to support the team – we just wish we had more in Canberra.”

Duncan says game day only strengthens that bond.

“The atmosphere is great and we enjoy the game day experience. The kids enjoy the activities and the giveaways – not to mention kick to kick at the end.”

The family’s GIANTS passion even extends to predictions and favourite players.

“Clayton Oliver – he's an amazing player and will be a game changer for the team,” Duncan said when asked who he thinks will win next year’s Kevin Sheedy Medal.

And as for his favourite?

“Tom Green – local, great player and seems like a decent bloke.”

For families like the Duncans, a GIANTS membership means more than just attending games - it’s about being part of a club that invests in its people, supports junior footy, and creates opportunities for young fans to feel like they are truly part of the action.
