GIANTS star and proud Canberran Tom Green has been honoured in his home city with the naming of the Tom Green Cup.
School football sides from year 7-9 from across the nation’s capital will now battle it out for the Tom Green Cup named in honour of the AFL star and former Marist College student.
Drafted out of Canberra back in 2019, Green is a proud advocate of the nation’s capital and has now been honoured with the naming of a competition he was once part of as a young budding young teenager with AFL aspirations.
“I absolutely loved my time playing footy in Canberra, so having the AFL Canberra year 7-9 junior school cup named after me is incredibly humbling,” Green said.
“Growing up with Marist, I saw first-hand how much school footy meant to everyone, and I hope these competitions continue to grow and inspire the next generation.”
Steven Mahar from AFL NSW/ACT said it was a no-brainer to have the competition named in the proud Canberran’s honour.
“Our year 7-9 competition was the only competitive pathway that was unnamed and Tom Green was the obvious choice for the naming of the cup given how active he still is in the Canberra community and his willingness to help grow the game,” Mahar said.
“Our year 7-9 competition invites all schools across Canberra to enter a team to engage in a competitive pathway competition against other schools. Whilst the winning Canberra school will go on to compete against other schools around the state, we thought it would be fitting to have a trophy for our local winner and we see Tom as the perfect person to have the trophy named after.”
With the naming of the Tom Green Cup, the GIANTS star joins other notable Canberra athletes to have school trophies named in their honour, joining the Jack Steele Shield & Hannah Dunn Cup (year 5-6 competition), as well as the Mark Armstrong Shield & Elise O'Dea Cup (year 10-12 competition).
The inaugural Tom Green Cup will be awarded to the winning school football team following the regional final next Tuesday, August 12.
