Toby Greene will continue to lead the GIANTS, remaining as standalone captain with an unchanged leadership group for the 2024 AFL season.

The 30-year-old star forward will take the reins once again following his appointment as sole captain last year.

Greene was first appointed co-captain of the club ahead of the 2022 AFL season - alongside Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly, who will continue as vice-captains for the second straight season.

The increased responsibility as sole captain seemed to only further enhance Greene’s on-field performance last year, with the dynamic forward kicking a career-best 66 goals on his way to his second Kevin Sheedy Medal as club champion.

The reappointment as standalone skipper also comes following Greene’s recognition as one of the game’s best leaders, named All Australian captain for the first time last year as he collected his third All-Australian blazer.

Greene will be supported once again by Coniglio and Kelly and said he is humbled to continue to lead the club he joined as a fresh-faced teenager.

“It’s a massive honour to continue to lead this footy club,” he said.

“I learnt a lot last year with it being my first time as sole captain and I really enjoy the role and everything that comes with it.

“There’s no doubt it took a while for me to get to this point, but I’ve worked a lot on my leadership skills and have come a long way and I love leading this club.”

Greene paid tribute to his fellow leaders, with Coniglio and Kelly also joined by Tom Green, Harry Perryman, Sam Taylor and Connor Idun who all remain in the leadership group for a second straight season.

“I’ve obviously got a really strong relationship with Stephen and Josh and once again I’ll lean heavily on them throughout the year to really guide the club,” Greene said.

“We are really building a stable core unit of leaders that can take this club forward into what I think is a super exciting time for the club.

“We’ve got a great mix of older guys but also a real variety within the leadership group and I love seeing guys like Tom Green, Sam Taylor, Connor Idun and Harry Perryman continue to become better leaders as it makes the team better and the club as a whole.

“Following off the back end of last year I think the group is in a great spot and we’re all really excited for the season to get started in a few weeks.”

GIANTS Executive General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, said Greene’s appointment, as well as the rest of the leadership group, is a great sign of the stability of the group.

“Toby showed last year that he’s the perfect person to lead this footy club and we are thrilled to have him remain captain for 2024 and beyond,” McCartney said.

“Not only is Toby one of the best players in the competition but he’s developed into one of the best leaders and someone who our players love to follow.

“His leadership qualities were on full display last season, and we are extremely proud to have the reigning All Australian captain as our captain yet again for season 2024.

“Alongside Toby we are excited to have the same leadership group as last year as they all played vital roles amongst a range of outstanding leaders within our club.

“Stephen and Josh were obvious choices as vice-captains and will continue to support Toby and be crucial leaders for the club, as they have been for over a decade.

“It’s also fantastic to see Tom, Harry, Sam and Connor remain in the group after all four played huge roles in their first year in the group last season. All of them have great leadership qualities and play a key role in what we do at the GIANTS.

“This is a leadership group with a great mix of experience and qualities to lead us into what is hopefully a big 2024 and beyond.”

The GIANTS open their 2024 AFL campaign in the AFL’s first-ever Opening Round in a huge clash with reigning premiers Collingwood on Saturday, March 9 at GIANTS Stadium.
