Labor candidate for Blacktown, John Robertson welcomed the announcement that the Keneally Government has provided extra support to help foster the next generation of Western Sydney AFL players, like Israel Folau.
On Thursday March 3, Minister for Citizenship John Hatzistergos awarded the Greater Western Sydney Football Club $9,100 to help nurture young talent from the area’s culturally diverse communities.
“Sports stars like Israel Folau have made a massive contribution to the sporting excellence of Blacktown,” Mr Robertson said.
“We want to inspire and encourage more young sporting talent like Israel Folau – and that’s what this funding is about.”
Mr Robertson said the extra funds would also help promote the Greater Western Sydney Football Club across the Blacktown community.
“The GWS Giants are helping to cement Blacktown as a centre of sporting excellence,” Mr Robertson said.
“The Giants are truly representative of Blacktown, with players from all cultural backgrounds.
“These funds will help build support for the game across our proudly diverse community.
“Blacktown is one of Australia’s great multicultural success stories and we have countless community organisations that play an important role.”
The funding was made available to the Community Relations Commission for grants to community organisations to encourage full participation in all aspects of life in New South Wales.
