Baulkham Hills boy Mitchell Cashmore was the envy of all his school friends on the weekend when he participated in one of the biggest weekends on the Australian sporting calendar, the AFL Grand Final.
Mitchell, a participant at the Baulkham Hills NAB AFL Auskick centre, had the time of his life during a weekend of action packed activity.
Accompanied by his father, Mitchell kicked the weekend off in style at the NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year Awards Dinner where he stepped onto the hallowed MCG turf for the first time before posing for photos with Hawthorn legend, Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico, and the Premiership Cup.
On Friday, Mitchell, marched alongside fellow Auskickers and the two competing Grand Final teams through the streets of Melbourne for the traditional Toyota AFL Grand Final Parade, and if that wasn’t enough, Mitchell, was back at the MCG on Grand Final day to play footy at halftime and help present the Cats players with their 2009 Premiership Medals.
Mitchell said the best part was presenting the premiership medals to the winning side and playing on the MCG.
“The best part was giving the medal to (James) Kelly. I loved playing footy on the MCG at half time the crowd was so noisy though. I didn’t want to go to bed on Saturday night I was so excited. I fell asleep in the Geelong jumper they gave me,” Mitchell said.
Young Mitchell’s opportunity to participate in this once in a lifetime Grand Final experience came to life through NAB’s Auskicker of the Year competition, which exists to reward Auskick participants across the country for their teamwork and dedication to the sport.
In 2009, NAB has been celebrating four years with the AFL Auskick program and has been rewarding Auskick centres and participants across the country through four new initiatives; NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year, NAB AFL Auskick Assistance Fund, NAB AFL Auskick Centre of the Year and NAB Footy Frenzy.
