There were no shortage of talking points as GIANTS General Manager of Football Jason McCartney joined Garry and Sam on SEN Breakfast ahead of the final day of the 2022 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period.

“All the work has nearly been done, we’re just having a look at something else which has already been reported on around Jaeger O’Meara but other than that we’re done and dusted,” McCartney told SEN Breakfast on Wednesday morning.

“There’s established long relationships with a few people at the club and obviously Jaeger’s very close with one of our co-captains in Stephen Coniglio.

“We’re very hopeful, but we’re unsure where it lands at the moment.”

Across this Trade Period the GIANTS have secured the number one draft pick in this year’s NAB AFL Draft and three more picks under 20, along with a future first-round selection.

“One of our objectives entering this trade period was strengthening our draft hand and to get up the order and we’ve achieved that,” McCartney said.

"Obviously our recruiting team is all over the draft pool and that's what I really rely on.

"Aaron (Cadman) is in the discussion, as are other players as well."

The GIANTS announced the departure of Senior Assistant Coach Mark McVeigh on Monday afternoon after he decided to step away from the club after nearly a decade of service. Over recent weeks the club has also announced the appointments of Ben Hart and Brett Montgomery to Adam Kingsley’s coaching staff, as well as Robbie Chancellor in a new role as Head of Development.

“Mark’s a wonderful person, a wonderful football person and he provided nine outstanding years at the GIANTS,” McCartney said.

“The door will always be open and we’d welcome Mark back to the GIANTS at any stage.”

The GIANTS hold a strong hand heading into next month’s NAB AFL Draft, with four picks inside the top 20, including the number one pick. The GIANTS currently hold picks 1, 15, 18, 19, 31, 57 and 61.

The Continental Tyres Trade Period runs until 7:30pm on Wednesday, October 12.
