The GIANTS were defeated by cross-town rivals the Swans in the VFL on Saturday night at the SCG. 

Tanner Bruhn (25 disposals), Jake Stein (19 disposals), Kieren Briggs (17 disposals, 20 hit-outs) and Jake Riccardi (2 goals) all impressed, but it wasn't enough as the Swans ran away with a convincing 10.17 (77) to 5.9 (39) win.

“I thought it was a brave effort against a talented team in really good form,” said GIANTS VFL coach Damian Truslove.

“We fought the game out well but they were too good in the end.” 

Truslove shared his assessments of the AFL and VFL listed players who played in the match.

AFL Listed Players: 

5 Tanner Bruhn

25 disposals, 4 marks, 6 tackles

Tanner was really good coming back to VFL level. He played in the midfield and his movement and spread around the stoppages was excellent. He was great with ball in hand.

25 Lachlan Keeffe

16 disposals, 7 marks

Outstanding down back. He won or halved many critical contests and was excellent supporting our young defenders throughout the contest. 

26 Jake Riccardi

11 disposals, 2 goals

Attacked the aerial contests with aggression and brought the ball to ground well. He was very lively in the forward half of the ground. 

28 Zach Sproule

10 disposals, 3 marks

A little quiet for his standards but his work rate was fantastic all night. He was our second ruck and competed hard.

29 Cameron Fleeton

6 disposals, 2 marks

Another solid performance down back and as per usual he competed really hard. We gave him the role on Logan McDonald and they had a great battle for the entire contest.

31 Jarrod Brander

16 disposals, 6 marks 

Was really solid on the wing and found plenty of the ball. His decision making with the ball in hand was fantastic.

32 Kieren Briggs

17 disposals, 20 hit-outs

Competed hard and had a really good battle in the ruck against the experienced Callum Sinclair.

35 Will Shaw

9 disposals, 1 goal

He had an exciting start to the game finding plenty of the ball in the front half. He was quiet in the second half due to soreness but competed well. 

42 Jake Stein

19 disposals, 5 marks

Was a great leader for us down back. He had some aggressive spoils and was influential with our ball movement out of the back half.

45 Wade Derksen

11 disposals, 1 goal

Played predominantly forward this week. He led at the ball well and will continue to develop his forward craft.

VFL Listed and Academy Players:   

48 Harry Grintell

6 disposals, 3 tackles

Played a more defensive role off half back and is continuing to improve his defensive patterns every week.

49 Sam Frost  

14 disposals, 4 tackles

Had a good battle with Ben Ronke down back. He competed hard for the entire contest and played the game out being sore and fatigued.

50 Billy Clark  

11 disposals, 1 goal

Played on the wing and found plenty of the ball on the outside of the contest. His decision making with the ball in hand was first class all night. 

51 Ryan Hebron

15 disposals, 6 marks

Played the majority of the game down back. He was hard and tough around the contest and his leadership was great. He finished the game playing a role up forward and gave us a spark.

52 Brodie Romensky

11 disposals, 5 tackles

Played half forward this week and got involved with our ball movement through the middle of the ground. His defensive pressure in the forward half was great.

53 Bailey Stewart 

10 disposals, 3 tackles

Played in the midfield and attacked the ball really hard.

55 Jacob Conlan

10 disposals, 4 marks

Jacob’s second game for the club at VFL level. He played as a key forward and led at the ball well. He made great decisions with the ball in hand.

56 Noah Casalini

8 disposals, 3 marks

Worked really hard without finding a lot of the ball. He presented at the ball well and pressured the opposition.

57 Sebastian Quirk

8 disposals, 4 tackles

Played forward and back in defensive roles this week. He continues to improve each and every week.

60 Leyton Chisholm

13 disposals, 5 tackles

Hard and tough around the contest in the midfield and has developed a really good connection with Kieren Briggs around the stoppages. 

62 Jaelen Pavlidis

6 disposals, 2 tackles

Another one playing his second game for the club, he ran hard between contests and was clean with the ball in hand. It was a good experience for him to play against a solid side like the Swans.

63 Riley Bice

A GIANTS Academy product, Riley played across half back and gave us great run and drive with the ball in hand.

66 Luke Fellows

11 disposals, 4 marks

Luke’s playing a good consistent role for us on the wing. He ran hard to support our defence and his work around the stoppages was impressive.
