Match Preview: Round 10 v Walyalup (Fremantle Dockers)

Everything you need to know as we celebrate Sir Doug Nicholls Round in an exciting clash with the Dockers at ENGIE Stadium.

The GIANTS returned to their best last week with a thrilling win over the Cats and now the orange tsunami will look to roll over the visiting Dockers on Saturday afternoon.

    AFL Round 10

    GIANTS v Walyalup
    Saturday, May 17 at 4:15pm
    ENGIE Stadium | Wangal Country

What It Means For The GIANTS

The GIANTS (5-4) will return home to ENGIE Stadium riding a high, following last week’s thrilling win over the Cats.

Entering Geelong with their backs to the ropes after three straight losses, the GIANTS bounced back in brilliant fashion to register a morale-boosting four-point win over the red-hot Cats – remarkably their fifth straight win over Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

The GIANTS will now be hoping the orange tsunami can continue to surge on Saturday when they return home to play their first game at ENGIE Stadium since round four.

Adam Kingsley will also be hoping several of his stars continue to fire against the Dockers on Saturday, headlined by reigning Coleman Medallist Jesse Hogan who featured last week against the Cats with a dominant seven-goal haul.

Tom Green (37 touches, six clearances, a goal) was also superb in his 100th AFL game and will be aiming to continue his strong form at home on Saturday, while Finn Callaghan (29 touches, 555 metres gained) and Jake Riccardi – who kicked the match-winning goal against the Cats – will also be hoping to feature strongly after impressive games in the win over Geelong last week.

Following a period of heavy travel, the GIANTS will be hoping they can now hold down the fort at home at ENGIE Stadium on Saturday as they push for a top-four spot.

    The Opposition

The Dockers - who have recognised the traditional owners of Fremantle by renaming themselves Walyalup Football Club for Doug Nicholls Round - will enter Saturday’s game following an unusual clash with Collingwood in which they dominated areas of the game but ultimately fell short by 14 points at Optus Stadium.

The Dockers led the Pies in inside 50s by an incredible margin of +28 (62 to 34) and clearances by +13 (43 to 30) but were unable to convert their dominance onto the scoreboard as the Pies registered a gutsy 15.7 (97) to 12.11 (83) win.

The tough loss made it consecutive defeats for the Dockers who were smashed by 61 points by St Kilda the week prior, following a brilliant 18-point win over the Crows in round seven.

Sitting at 4-5 for the season, the Dockers have come under fire in recent weeks for their inconsistency and will be hoping they can buck the trend of poor performances away from Optus Stadium on Saturday, when they face the GIANTS at ENGIE Stadium.

    Recent History

If the Dockers are to register an upset road win then they’ll have to create history on Saturday, with the visitors having never beaten the GIANTS in four attempts at ENGIE Stadium.

As well as four straight wins at home over the Dockers, the GIANTS will enter Saturday’s clash having won the last two matches between the sides over the last two seasons.

In their most recent meetings, the GIANTS beat the Dockers by nine points in a close round 23 encounter at ENGIE Stadium last year and by 70 points the year prior at the venue in round 14, 2023.

Adding further confidence to their undefeated record against the Dockers at ENGIE Stadium, the GIANTS have won all four clashes between the sides at the venue by an average of 46 points.

Key Match Up: Can The Dockers Stop Hulking Hogan?

One of the Dockers’ biggest hurdles this weekend will be their ability to restrict GIANTS superstar Jesse Hogan.

Fresh off a starring seven-goal haul against the Cats, Hogan will now face his former side at the ground he calls his favourite in the AFL – ENGIE Stadium.

Hogan spoke earlier this week about his excitement of his likely battle with Dockers skipper- and good friend - Alex Pearce - who is the obvious matchup to try and quell the gun full forward’s influence.

After an interrupted start to his season following a thumb injury and calf soreness, Hogan has returned to the peak of his powers and will be looking to add to his season tally of 25.5 this weekend in order to help the GIANTS overcome the Dockers.

GIANTS Player To Watch: Tom Green

Despite a fifth-place finish in last year’s Brownlow Medal it is possible that GIANTS midfielder Tom Green has taken his game to even greater heights in 2025.

A key cog in the GIANTS’ engine room and one of the competition’s best inside midfielders, Green has starred to start the 2025 season and currently stands as the AFL’s leading ball winner this year, averaging 33.1 disposals per game across his eight games.

Green enters Saturday’s clash following a fairytale 100th AFL game last week in which he starred with 37 disposals, six clearances, four tackles, and a monster long-range goal in the club’s thrilling four-point win over Geelong.

Given the Dockers possess a star-studded midfield, with the likes of Caleb Serong, Andrew Brayshaw and Shai Bolton at times, Green will have to continue his stellar form to help the GIANTS take down the visiting Dockers.

    In The Mix

With the club’s VFL side undefeated after six games there is plenty of talent performing well at the level pushing their case for AFL selection.

Click here for a recap of last week’s big VFL win where, notably, James Leake and Max Gruzewski starred to put their name in contention for AFL consideration this week.

Several GIANTS stars will also need to prove their fitness this week in a bid to take on the Dockers. Check out the Rehab Report down below for the most recent update.

Dockers Ease Pressure With Impressive Win Over GIANTS

The Dockers have recorded a strong win over the GIANTS at ENGIE Stadium.

Walyalup has brushed aside lingering doubts over the impact of its attacking weapons as livewire duo Shai Bolton and Michael Frederick sparked a thumping 34-point win over a lacklustre GIANTS side on Saturday.

The Dockers strangled the GIANTS’ ball movement but took time to put the hosts away until a six-goal blitz in the second half set up a breakthrough 13.17 (95) to 8.13 (61) victory at ENGIE Stadium.

Prized recruit Bolton put the full spread of his immense talents on display for his new club as a forward-half threat while being just as critical in linking the Dockers' transitions when the game was on the line.

Bolton finished with 24 disposals including 12 contested possessions while booting three goals including a team-lifter when smothering Lachie Whitfield in a tackle then slotting a difficult set shot.

Frederick was just as pivotal to the Dockers snapping their hoodoo at the GIANTS' home after losing on all of their previous four visits by an average 46 points, as the zippy forward stepped up as an unlikely focal point with four marks inside 50 during the early exchanges and finishing with three goals.

Isaiah Dudley was another to light up the Dockers' forward half until subbed out in the final term as the visitors brought a X-factor that the GIANTS sorely missed.

Luke Jackson shook off a week of speculation over his future at the Dockers as he shouldered the load in the ruck and appeared to relish spending more time at the coalface in an entertaining battle with Kieren Briggs.

The Dockers big man gathered 21 disposals with seven clearances as a dominant presence around the stoppages while edging Briggs (13, 3) 32-26 for hitouts to again prove that he is more than capable as a first-choice ruck.

Caleb Serong (36 disposals, eight clearances) and Andrew Brayshaw (30, 3) were at their brilliant best in the engine room as Jackson regularly gave them first use of the ball, while Neil Erasmus (19, 5) made the most of his opportunity to line up in the starting 22.

The GIANTS found it hard to get their run and gun game style going as the Dockers stifled their ball movement out of the back half and locked down on their prime movers in the midfield.

Finn Callaghan did what he could to get the GIANTS up and running with 24 disposals and seven clearances though the midfielder was fortunate to play out the game after copping a nasty blow to his shoulder moments after the three-quarter time siren sounded.

Lachie Ash (29) and Lachie Whitfield (25) racked up the possessions in typical style though lacked the pace and penetration to open up the Dockers through the midfield.

A trio of consolation goals ensured the GIANTS were not held to their lowest score at their home ground in the 100th match at the venue but the worry remains over how they can move the ball forward to boot bigger scores.
